So this one would probably be exclusively for Dakkanauts who've lived in the province of Ontario, since if I remember no one else in the world has two levels of tests for their drivers license. Anyways, for those of you that do understand what I'm talking about, it's been a year since my G2 license and I've been basically driving every single day since I passed, so I'm preparing to take my G-test and turn my G2 license into a full one. Aside from that one booboo I mentioned a few months ago with the parking, I've basically been flawless at driving and have been forcing myself to adhere to even the tiniest rule in the book for the past year. However the problem is I drive a Jeep Unlimited Wrangler. Currently I have no problems with it because I've gotten a large space for it to park in (both at work and at home), but this past weekend I went to the testing site and found that their regulation parking spaces are tiiiiiiny. Like almost half the size of the parking lots I frequent. And to top it off I gotta back into it (at least once, if not twice) at a time where it would be filled with people who are likely even worse drivers than I am (this facility handles all tests, which means people who have barely had any time behind the wheel are gonna be there too). Not to mention, according to my old teacher, I'm only allowed one "fix" turn for each parking attempt during the test. Unfortunately under normal circumstances I usually require two to get out of a particularly tight parking lot.

I have spoken with my old teacher and he's seen me drive and told me how to proceed during a test (including the administrative parts) and said I should have no problem, but I am still worried that I might feth up. I was thinking of hiring him again for the G test, but my dad pointed out that because I've been driving the Jeep for a year now, I might no longer be accustomed to driving a small sedan and it might mess me up even more (my old teacher's car is a 2012 Toyota Corolla if I remember). He is correct in that my Jeep has a larger turning radius than the corolla and, having no trunk (well, one that sticks out anyways) I'm not accustomed to estimating the distance from my rear window to the back of the car anymore.

I have roughly two months, which should be more than enough time to either train myself to work the Jeep or retrain myself for a corolla (as luck would have it, my dad's corolla is roughly the same size as my instructor's). But would it be wiser to go with a smaller car with an instructor, or go with the car that I has more or less became an extension of me for the past year?

Two levels of licenses....

That's pretty strange.
Kinda annoying to have to take a driving test after a test to drive unrestricted.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

I have no clue how Dakka's moderation work. I expect it involves throwing a lot of d100 and looking at many random tables.

I know its not the same BUT, I didnt take my Caddillac to my driving test because it was too big. I borrowed my aunts car.
Is that an option? Or does it legally have to be owned by you?
Edit: Read more: go with the smaller car, a car is a car and you could figure it out in a few days

Somewhere in south-central England.

Go and take the test in the neighbouring province.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The test is more or less the same whereever I go, Ontario is just weird that it adds a "middle" test that is essentially just "take the car around the block (almost literally). If traffic is good, it can take literally 10-15 minutes to finish that portion. The actual one, to see if you would be a competent driver, is the one I'm about to take, and the other provinces don't recognize the G2 as a full license either so I can't just exchange it (basically at this point it doesn't really matter where I take the test).

Yes, it's a weird system. And I read that this only exists in Ontario; not even the other canadian provinces are this weird, let alone other countries.

@ hotsauceman1: I'll take my dad's corolla out for a drive this weekend and see how I do. If I get the instructor I can legally use his car for the test (and is probably better, since they would have it fixed and up to shape given their profession, rather than my own car where I still don't know what half the sounds it makes are). It's just that I use my Jeep to commute to work, so I'm afraid I'll unlearn everything the moment the work week starts.

From what I experienced of Toronto drivers, I think Ontario needs a third test added

Yeah, the graduated licensing is nothing but a cash grab. Even the G test is not much more then the G2 test, except you have to go on the highway (though I guess even that depends on where you take it).

Honestly, a tester who puts you in a situation where there's any real chance of causing damage is not good at their job. You can judge a person's ability to parallel park by having them park behind one car just as easily as having them squeeze between two and risk an insurance claim. The testing centre near me has a row of spots down the side where you go and back in away from the busy area of the parking lot for the same reason.

If you're more comfortable with your Jeep than a car at this point, I'd say use it, but if the shape it's in is real shaky, just remember that they can refuse the test if it's to the point of being potentially unsafe. You know, lights out, do-rag gas cap, Flintstones floor panels. The real nit-picky stuff,

Anyway, good luck,

The jeep at this moment is in good shape; I recently had an engine problem and they did a full checkup on it (the jeep is new, so it's under full warranty). It's mostly me afraid something will happen between now and then (2 months is a long time for something to go wrong again).

The tester's requirements are fine by me, it's my own skills that I feel like might be lacking. I think I can get up to shape if I just train enough (well, I should be able to know exactly where my jeep ends), I'm just wondering if I'm doing something stupid by not taking an easier car.

As a person that drives for a living Id suggest you take what youre used to driving. My wife has a Ford Escape and every time I jump into it, it feels weird to drive and I cant park it for gak and the shifter is on the floor and not on the dash.

Trust me, youre gunna get in that corolla and suddenly forget where the shifter is because of nerves and then youll get frazzeled because of it and forget just when to cut in for parking. Take the vehicle youre used to driving and youll do fine

We say it's weird from the UK perspective, but we have our own classifications.

I passed my test around 2000, so I can drive most things barring proper trucks and HGV.

People who passed after that can't drive Minibus sized stuff without extra training,
