Subject: My Mordheim blog: Everything old is new again. Update 6/26 mercenary kit bash!!

Nearly 20 years ago now I was introduced to the world of tabletop gaming by a wonderful little skirmish game called Mordheim. It was not too expensive, and eased me into the insanity that is games workshop. I loved the miniatures (even some of the truly ugly ones) and enjoyed making terrain for my group of friends to game on. Now 2 decades latter, and with more than 20 GW armies between Warhammer and 40k, I have decided to re visit Mordheim. I still have most of the old models, and I have added to them with other GW models s and some from other manufacturers. My goal is to have a playable warband for at least 5 out of the 6 original warbands. I may also break down and come up with a witch hunter warband as there are some awesome 3rd party miniatures out there.
Below you will see the some pictures of what I am starting off with. I'll start with a few pics of my sisters of Sigmar warband, then post pics of the others when I get a free moment.
This warband consists of a matriarch, sister superior with 2 hammers, sister superior with hammer and shield, sister superior with hammer and whip, an augur, 4 sisters with hammer and buckler, 2 with two handed hammers, and 2 with flails. I am considering converting some of these to have more whips, as I love the look of whips with the hammers, and as I recall they were pretty awesome in game.

Here are some pictures of the rest of my warbands.
First up is the undead. I love some of the classic miniatures from this line, especially the two dregs. The vampire is bit too 1930's Dracula, but still a pretty good mini. The necromancer is very boring pose, but its fairly well sculpted considering that. The GW zombies are fairly horrible, so I used mantic instead. The ghouls are pewter ones from reaper, and the hellhounds are from reaper as well. not sure if I will use those hounds or order some of the gamezone undead wolves.
Next warband is my skaven. These are pretty much all from the blood island box set, and they are worlds better than the old pewter skaven and plastic gutter runners that came in the Mordheim box. The giant rats are once again from reaper, as I have never found any other giant rat miniatures I really liked.
Next up are the sad remains of my very first miniatures, the cult of the Possessed box set. I long ago converted them to be 40k cultists (hence the bolt pistol on the magister) so most of them are missing a hand, which had been converted to hold pistols or las guns. These guys are going to take some serious work.
Last but not least is what made me want to revisit mordheim: The mercenaries. I found about 20 of these still on the sprue in a box a few months ago, and kit bashed them with some flagellants and various bretonians to make some ruffians for a D&D campaign I am running. There should be enough guys here to do at least 2 warbands, or one very versatile warband.
Thats all I have for now. I'll post a few close up of some of the stuff I have already painted when I get a chance, and post updates as I go. Thanks for looking, and C&C are welcome and appreciated!

Got some work done on painting a few skaven and repairing my old cultists hands. I used some dwarven weapons to replace the 40k bits I had converted them with in the past. I'm thinking that my be one of the background bits for that warband, that they wiped out some dwarves and use their weapons as trophies.
Pics of the skaven first:
Still need to finish this guys cables and a few other bits, but hes mostly done.
Heres one of the command models from Isle of Blood that I'll be using as a black furred skaven.
And heres some shots of the converted chaos cultists:
And for reference, heres one of the cultists before I stripped off the 40 K and cleaned off the VERY old paint job:

Been a while since I posted, as I haven't been able to get much painting time between school, work, and internship. I did manage to finish up most of my sisters (minus one who was hiding behind a paint pot) and a Reikland Captain, which I have no idea where I got. I have also been putting some thoughts into basing. I am doing the whole undead crew as mud, as that covers up the weird bases on mantic zombies well. I was planning on the rest having a cobble stone or brick look, and having each war band the same to create a sense of continuity. Then I saw the flag stone bases mantic is selling from Dungeon saga, and I think I may go with those. They aren't exactly what I was thinking, but they are fairly cheap and waaayyyy less time consuming then cutting a bunch of foam into brick shapes. Heres a link to them: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/dungeon-saga/accessories/product/dungeon-saga-flagstone-bases.html
I would love to hear some opinions about the bases. For now, heres some pics of the most recent progress.
Thanks for looking, and as always, comments and criticism welcome and appreciated!

how are you gonna base them? Any chance they'll move to round bases?

Thanks the brave! Supreme overlord, I think I'm going to keep them on square bases. If I end up doing custom basing materials it will be easier as I already have tons of old square bases. Also the bases I was looking at from mantic are square as well.

my latest efforts on this project have been getting the ruins I started last week sprayed so they have a base coat, but I haven't had a chance to take pics. I have also pretty much finished the possessed model for my Nurgle cult of the possessed. I had to rip some of his parts off other models I had used them on over the years, and do some rough greenstuffing to fill in gaps from where I had trimmed his arms etc. I hope to try and get some weathering done on the ruins and maybe some of the half timber facade in the next week or so. Anyway, here some pics of the possessed.
As always thanks for looking, and comments and criticism welcome and appreciated!

So I got some work done on the building I've been working on. I got a base coat of beige on, washed that with brown, and then put a few coats of lighter drybrushes on.
First shots are the base coat:
Heres a shot of the washes ( including a pic of my basset hounds butt)
And here are the pics once the dry brushes are done
Next up for this building is some more weathering such as smoke and wall art etc, then the half timbering on the exterior.
As always thanks for looking and comments and criticism welcome and appreciated!

Sorry I haven't updated this thread in a while. Between holidays and end of semester projects and internship, my time have been pretty well eat up. Thankfully I did have a couple days around Christmas where I had some down time so I got some serious progress done on my next building I was working on. I have the main structure done now, and most of the roof tiles as well. Not sure how I want to proceed as its too cold for spray paints in my part of the world, and I'm not sure if I want to do it all with brushes and washes. I'll have to think about it. For now, here are the WIP shots I took.
Finally getting some progress on this after having it glare at me from my hobby desk for more than a month has put a bur in my saddle and I hope to get some painting done on this fairly soon.
Thanks for looking and comments nd criticism are welcome and appreciated as always!

Yeah, the struggle is real with unfinished projects. Im normally pretty good about staying on top of things and dont have more than about 50-100 infantry un painted a any one time. Right now thoug, I have the entirety of the calth and prospero boxes waiting to be painted up as imperial fists. Plus the stuff from dark imperium I just got for Christmas. Plus this building. Thank god I'm done with my internship for school soon.
I'm glad you like the roof tiles as well. I thought about cutting out individual tiles to give it a more ramshackle look, but time and expediency got the better of me ;-)

We share a similar story and passion, though mine is for Necromunda. I'm no stranger to Mordheim though and I'd put it in my top 5 games of all time from GW (Blood Bowl and Gorkamorka are also on that list). I was fortunate enough to play a Mordheim campaign in winter 2015, it was the first time I'd played since '99. I built a lot of terrain in a short period and we played on the WIP but when spring arrived everyone scattered and Mordheim has not come back up since. I have a nice collection of 3/4 painted terrain that I've no motivation for whatsoever.
I have really enjoyed this thread so far, thank you for posting it. Subbed and looking forward toy seeing more of your work.

Sorry for the long time between updates. School and work have been limiting my hobby time, and the death guard I got fro Christmas have gobbled up what little hobby time I have had.
So I got a first color coat on this building, and it was far more salmon color than I liked. Then I did a coat of brown wash, which helped a little
Next up I got a tube of parchment color paint and did a dry brush. looking much better!
Now I'm working on getting the timbering done:
So thats where I am at as of now. I have also redone the front doors and put some timbering around the dormers. Next up will be detailing and weather in the inside, and then on to basing..
Thanks for looking as always, and commenst and criticism welxome and appreciated!!

Amazingly I haven't had any interest in the game. I bought the box, opened it, didn't see the Necromunda I was looking for, closed the box, been on the shelf since. I know there's an advanced rule book but I'm feeling chapped by this. I was fairly happy with Shadow War- Armageddon. Fast play, decent terrain, solid story line, seemed like a Necromunda-lite primer to test the waters for a larger Necromunda release. I'm thinking that Necromunda 2017 is going to suffer a hopeless withering death as a multi-structure game because the terrain is very expensive and unless someone is an avid hobbyist or has a lot of old Necromunda terrain (even the original card stock set) they won't stay interested. The #1 complaint I read on forums re; SW-A is that the terrain in the core set was too sparse, too difficult to hide etc becasue there was nothing to hide behind. The terrain is stunning and while I was fortunate enough to pick up a lot of it for a significant discount it's still just main structures, there's no boxes or barricades etc.
My gaming group is currently deep into the AoS Firestorm campaign but when we finish this I'm going to try to create some interest in Necromunda as a board game and possibly get the multi-level going. If not... well, there's always my collection of everything from 1995.
If Mordheim ever releases again (and no, not Path to Glory AoS) I'll be all over it if it's not a board game with platform option.
