I want to start this thread by saying, Keep your whining in the general discussion threads.

Ynnari are do for a codex (more than likely), but until that time, what are we thinking? I know there are still those of us that will persevere through this latest FAQ and still play the army because we are passionate about it.

TLDR of the new soul burst.. Only on your turn; Each action is one use only per turn.

So how does this change our list building and play strategy? The following is a collection of some of my recent thoughts.

I think we all know that the large majority will still drop in a Patrol detachment of Yvraine, blob of Reapers, and some throw away troops unit. Thus allowing that dbl tapping. Moving on.. Previously to the FAQ, there were two ways that we saw soulburst happening that effected how we designed our lists. Destroying an enemy unit or an enemy unit destroying you, leading to some balance of MSU style armies. That is not going to be effective moving forward, I think running large squads is now the way to go. Overwhelm your opponent to ensure that unit destruction and since you have less units on the board, you have an easier time procing those SB actions. The plus side to having these large units, is now psychic buffs like conceal and protect, guide, etc all work better.

So now that our lists have changed.. there are some star units I think that can be used quite effectively still. Shining spears, Skyweavers, Wraithguard, fire dragons.... essentially most units that either have both shooting and melee, or are close quarters units.

I think its safe to assume that most of us will run an allied craftworld detachment to unlock some of the really nice strategems such as webway strike. Deepstrike a blob of WG.. use a warlock to quicken them into 7" range, and then boom goes the dynamite.. hit that soulburst and blast another.

For me personally, I am still a huge fan of Shining spears in my ynnari lists. And will be using them as a focal point to build a list around. Potentially trying out a seer council style list with a large powered up warlock conclave (since they are a unique unit that can do every SB action available)

Enough my rambling on .... what are your thoughts?

I don't think MSU was the best way to play Ynnari previously. It was always better to have one big unit with buffs getting to SfD off an enemy dying than it was to have a small unit get SfD off one of your own units dying.

Previously my Ynnari lists used mostly shooting units as it was easier to make use of SfD on them. CC units need two enemy units close together to make it work, and you can't help them out with a few Shuricannon shots if they don't finish their initial target. Now though you really need a mix of shooting and CC to get the most out of Ynnari.

I'm not a fan of Webway portaling big CC units in a craftworld list as failing to get quicken off can ruin your whole plan. Ynnari can have both Quicken and WotP however, which makes such strategies much more reliable.

Shining Spears always worked great as Ynnari for me. Usually they would use SfD to run away after killing a unit but they can make great use of an extra shooting or assault phase too. They are probably the best Ynnari unit now due to that flexibility.

Warlocks get an added bonus in Ynnari- their main problem is the risk of them exploding on a perils, but with Ynnari this can work in your favor! lol.

Also: It probably goes without saying but Alaitoc is going to be the best craftworld for Ynnari forces. A Spearhead detachment of 3 Fire Prisms (Flexible enough to finish off whatever unit you're trying to SfD off) and however many Wave serpents you need (-1 to hit to get your Wraithguard/Fire Dragons upfield) seems like the best fit.

Alaitoc Spearhead:

Add in a detachment with the compulsory Ynnari HQ and a full unit of Shining Spears.

I think Ynnari players are going to have to adapt, I find it odd that with the change that GW is still forcing a Ynnari warlord! That needs to be addressed at some point. Oddly we may see some changes to Dark Eldar and Harliquins which could really make Ynnari players have to choose their units! I guess we should really just wait for the new Chapter approved to see what is going to happen with some of the other armies that have things that need addressed. Many of my opponents for Ynnari were surprised how this armies rules worked for soul burst but I was never told it was unfair, though the fact I could always do things on their turns did make the game go much longer imo. I was very angry last night but now I still see the use of some of my tactics for taking Ynnari. Double shooting Dark Reapers will always be good, soulbursting my Shining spears or Wraithguard.. still really good!

Never argue with an idiot you just lower yourself to their level.

I've been playing my Ynnari as more of a mechanized list since 8th came out and don't really intend to change it. I'll still be focusing my Soulburst generation around Dark Reapers and D-Scythes, effectively working to Soulburst early on the reapers and then using them later to trigger soulburst for the wraiths by finishing off units.

On a personal level I'm still more confident in my Ynnari list using Dark Eldar troops (who just perform better for me than CWE troops) than I am in any 'pure' CWE force I've tinkered up. Yes I'll be bringing in a detachment of CWE to unlock the stratagems because they make good units even more potent but I can't see giving up double shoot or possibly 2 double moves or a single triple move for relics and WL traits that didn't impress me to start with. The changes will lead to a more focused soulburst effort where you work to maximize your single double shoot and then use your units to capitalize on the expected outcome of it but I just don't buy the 'sky is falling' mentality that somehow Ynnari can't be a competitive army or have lost all of their tools.
