Today at the Game Developer Conference (GDC), PlayFusion and Games Workshop announced a partnership to bring the Warhammer universe to live through augmented reality (AR)

The partnership between the two companies will be the development of an all-new-way for tabletop war gaming and trading card game (TGC) fans to experience the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe. Known as Warhammer Age of Sigma Champions, players will be able to collect, play and experience the title with both physical trading cards and a fully digital trading card videogame that will be accompanied by a completely immersive AR experience built using PlayFusion’s proprietary computer vision and augmented reality technology, the Enhanced Reality Engine.

Mark Gerhard, CEO and Co-Founder of PlayFusion commented on the announcement saying: “Partnering with Games Workshop fulfills a lifelong dream of contributing to the Warhammer universe. The majority of our team and I grew up part of the Warhammer community, so it’s a huge honour for all of us to not only partner with such an iconic British company but also to contribute to one of the original and best fantasy IPs in the world, we are really passionate about developing a rich and innovative new way for the community and beyond to experience the Age of Sigmar.”

PlayFusion have worked on a number of different projects over the years including Lightseekers, another TCG that was made in partnership with TOMY and released last year. For Warhammer Age of Sigma Champions, PlayFusion will be bring hundreds of collectible cards to market that players will be able to use to build their own decks, finding strategies and tactics that work for them. The physical cards will also come to life when viewed through PlayFusion’s Enhanced Reality Engine allowing players to unlock various enhanced gameplay options all while experience the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe in stunning AR.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions will also feature a unique physical-to-digital experience, allowing players to import their physical cards into the digital title and play online with those very cards. This will give players a whole new way to experience the title and take their decks into battle both online and offline.

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing for Games Workshop commented saying: “Working with such a talented and accomplished group like PlayFusion is an absolute privilege. Their passion, technological expertise, and just sheer ‘can do’ attitude has been seriously impressive, taking the richness of Warhammer Age of Sigmar and merging it with their innovative hybrid physical/digital trading card game makes for a winning combination anyway, but add in the cool AR functionality and this game really is something special.”

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions is set to release for iOS, Android and PC in July 2018.

VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on this story as updates are released so keep reading for more.

Weird that their official press release misspells sigmar as sigma a few times, even though the logo images clearly show what it should be.

Will be interesting to see for sure, particularly if it is a good card game. Also agreed with endtransmission that it is weird they have misspelled it Sigma a couple of times

To be fair I do that half the time as well. Sigmar Sigma are very similar sounding words and Sigma looks more "fantasy fancy" than Sigmar. Plus Sigma Sigmar can be just a difference in accent in how its said.

I suspect the original writer spelled it correctly but then somebody (could have been in house, could have been on the website) ran a (non-custom) spellchecker over it to avoid mistakes and just hit correct all

and Bingo sigmar becomes sigma

On the one hand this shows that the license is actually atractive and it starts bringing in people that ask for it/and accept using it.

On the other one, I am fairly puzzled they greenlit this as the first AoS license. It has me interested but I honestly thought they would start up with something bigger.

Is this going to attract people though? I mean Light Seekers was pretty generic as a game when I tried it at the games expo (the toys were quite fun though), and the only other AR game I've seen was the eye of judgement one, and it seemed more of a gimmick than a feature.

GW's computer game licensing seems hit and miss. On the one hand they are either ignorant or prefer being the bigger fish in the deal or just like giving smaller companies a chance (since if the game fails GW still got their cut and it doesn't really harm their core business of miniatures - even Dawn of War 3 crashing and burning as it did has likely not hurt GW directly).

On the other they can sign big companies like CA and Relic.

I guess there's a bit of spray and pray going on. That said I think that the biggest Sigmar game will likely be if/when CA makes their game into Sigmar. They've essentially already set up the core story of their current strategy game into a "world ending" situation so I could well see CA taking Warhammer TW and making Sigmar Total War in the future.

Played a demo game of this at WHF and did a little write up for TGA as I was very pleasantly surprised, thought it'd be worth C&Ping here for anyone curious. Just as an update I found out after I got home that the founders pack does now include two mats so got a friend to pick it up for me on the sunday! Also for what it's worth I think selling it as an augmented reality does it a disservice as that's just a little gimmick on top as far as I can tell, and the game doesn't need it at all. I believe you can also scan a code on any physical cards you own to add to your digital collection to play in the digital version

Had a demo of this game at Warhammer Fest today and thought it was worth giving a quick rundown for people that didn't have the opportunity as it's a great little game and doesn't seem to be much info out there as yet.
I didn't have much interest in this game initially, I think because I was expecting a hearthstone clone and when I looked at the cards it looked a bit convulted and confusing on that basis.
Well, it seems I was wrong! The game quickly becomes pretty intuitive as it revolves around a few key mechanics that, once you've grasped them, mean it all goes very smoothly. Apparently a game should take about 15 minutes, although mine probably was closer to half an hour, but sped up as we got the hang of it and I reckon after one game I could quite comfortably show someone else.
You select four Champion cards, which all have a points value, and can have a total points value of up to 20. Each champion also has a positive or negative impact on your starting health. Two of mine gave +1 and two gave -1 meaning I started with the standard 30 health. It's worth noting you have a collective health pool, none of your cards have health as far as I could see and you don't specifically damage your opponents units or champions, the damage is done direct to the collective pool. You win by reducing the pool to 0.
You also have four Blessings and a deck comprising Unit and Spell cards (not sure how many I'm afraid!)
You have a play mat that has a health counter, little summary of some of the icons, and four lanes. Each lane has a space for a Champion, a Blessing and a Unit or Spell. These lanes come into play in the game as certain cards will effect units, spells or champions in other lanes relative to the champion playing the card. To start you shuffle your blessings and place them on the Champion spots face down so you don't know which is which, and the players then deploy the champions on top of them in turn.

One of the key mechanics is that most cards have icons in each corner, and either rotate each turn, or under certain conditions , causing certain effects.
Each turn you get two actions, which can be to play a Unit or Spell, Use an ability or draw a card. If you choose to draw a card you can't then make a different action after, so you either take the other action and then draw, or draw twice.
Each lane only has one spot for a unit or spell and most champions can only either cast spells or summon units, not both, so you have to think about which lane you deploy your champions in and what units or spells you use with which champions. Once in play the units or spells usually rotate every turn, and will usually have a number or an X in each corner that has a different effect depending on the spell or unit that comes into play when it rotates on to it. For example some units will say' do X damage' (where X is a little rotate symbol I can't do on my phone) meaning the unit does an amount of damage equal to the number in the top left corner whenever it rotates. For an example arcane bolt does nothing for two turns and then does 7 damage on turn three. If the card has a symbol on every corner then it is discarded once it has fully rotated, if it has corners without symbols it will be discarded earlier.
The symbols in the champions card corners relate to missions that they need to complete to rotate, for example deal damage, summon a unit, heal etc. Once they have fully rotated the blessing card underneath them is revealed and becomes active giving a powerful buff.
That's the long and short of it but you have other text and abilities on the cards that allow certain synergies and other abilities, for example the orruks can stack on top of each other to allow support, as if in a waaaggh, meaning they can do more damage than unsupported in some cases. I played death and my opponent played and orruks destruction deck and they both felt like they played very thematically.
I think it's probably not the easiest game to explain so I might have made a hash of it, and like I said it looks confusing at first glance, but honestly plays so smoothly once youce had a couple of turns.
I did ask about the AR and digital angles but that all seemed a bit confused, I think it will be a while behind the physical release. I think the digital version is completely stand alone, but using the AR you can see your units by scanning the codes around each card and apparently you can level up the AR characters , both in the physical and digital versions.
Was almost tempted by the founders pack but decided to play it safe as I'm on a budget and wait for release as I'm not sure I'll need all four campaign decks. It's a proper tcg which I can imagine might put some people off but I'll definitely try it out on release

Can confirm - game is fething awesome.

They could have gone the safe and boring route to release yet another MTG/Hearthstone clone with AoS IP, but they took a chance and came up with something really unique and special.

Nice, except it does not ship to my place. Do we know if it's going to be available worldwide later ?

They've said on Twitter that they can only 100% confirm North America and UK at the moment but are working on other places. Would also assume that once it releases you will be able to order from independents
