It got me thinking... What if the "Dark Imperium" is an allusion to who truly was the good guys leading up to Horus Heresy? After all, histories are written by the victors.

'Dark Imperium' refers to actual allegiance of the imperium... That it's aligned tp the 'darlside' rather than a phrase referring to 'dark times for the imperium'...

Warmaster got a hold of secret experiment by big G that ultimately cultivated the primaris marines, which was set in motion by tje big E. Horus gathered troops tp revolt in order to prevent that from happening.

This is tinfoil hate theory 101

Horus did not get the Primarch project from the Emperor he made Omegon hand it over to Fabius. The project was stolen, what Cawl had to work with was the Sangprimus Portum not the original Primarch project that Omegon stole so it had no contact with the traitors. So a big no on that.

Yeah dude, that's just utterly ridiculous.

Horus Heresy novels are "primary source" material. What happened in those books IS WHAT HAPPENED, and none of what you cooked up took place.

Horus was years into the rebellion before Cawl even became a player. Cawl was a low level mechanicum punk until just before Horus made the push for Terra. Guilliman was busy working on his Imperium Secundus throughout most of the Heresy, not trying to build super secret uber-marines.

People seem so eager for Primaris Marines to have some sort of "dark secret" don't they?

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Nah no Horus being good guy. Just marines being orchestrated by Emperor to kill each other. Albeit that part failed. In part I suspect by Magnus blowing up Big E's webway project which E did not expect.

There’s not a lot there in terms of Primaris lore rn. They were a project that got put on hold for a while, they got restarted by Cawl, and they’re reinforcing the Imperium. People want to add story to fill in the blank spaces, and giving them a “dark secret” is pretty much standard procedure for any of 40k’s “good guy factions.”

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

Me I'm content to wait and see how GW develops it, building things up too much is just going to lead to dissappointment and anger when the truth differs too much from your headcanon.

Back onto Topic, Dark Imperium I'm pretty sure refers to Imperium Nihlius. the Imperium on the other side of the great rift, out of sight of the Astronomicon.

This is contradicted by basically every bit of lore ever released

Well, crap. Next, someone is going to say that the Dark Angels aren't actually Chaos Traitors, that the Unforgiven aren't the actual Loyalists to the Emprah, and that Cypher isn't actually the Lion himself.
