Nope, not a critique on the platform, but a thread to tell us what you’ve dug up on Netflix, Prime etc.

Me? Aside from bingeing Iron Fist Season 2, I’ve also recently watched ‘Killing Gunther’. It’s a fairly odd, and genuinely funny, comedy. Basic premise is as bunch of hitmen decide to bump off the elusive and near mythical ‘Gunther’, widely regarded as the best in the business.

What follows is pretty good, and got some belly laughs from me in places. It’s got some negative reviews attached, but I think they’ve done it a disservice. Sure it’s a bit haphazard, but for a directorial debut it’s definitely worth checking out. Spesh as you’ve already paid for Netflix!

Right, over to you.

Whatcha watching?

Trying to find a show or two I actually like as besides the Netflix/Marvel efforts nothing has really grabbed me, I've tried;

Gotham S4 seems like a slog to an obvious conclusion and even Pertwee Jnr can't lift it due to the drag of everyone else

Lost in Space just lurches along with eco/science dilemma of the week

Disenchantment, just lazy, but least it won't have to compete against Adventure Time

So I've been rewatching a few shows, Bottom, still disgustingly brilliant, B in 23, kind of trashy but Ms Ritter hhhhmm, and evil Dawson, The Good Place, aka The Ted Danson show, and Trek of assorted flavours

I just finished Ozark season 2 this past Thursday.

Was pretty fun and tense at times. Laura Linney was excellent (aside from an uncharacteristic turn at the very end), and the actress who plays Ruth put in another great performance. I'm not sure how I feel about the setup for a season 3. I don't feel that lightning can strike a third time, personally. The likely villains of next season just don't seem as menacing as the Cartel or the Snells.

Spoiler:
Certainly glad that the psycho FBI agent is gone though, couldn't stand him

Going to attempt Iron Fist S2 this weekend, but I've not been able to finish 3/4th of the Marvel Netflix shows (aside from Punisher, and even that started losing my attention), so I don't really have my heart into it going in.

Decided to give Hardcore Henry a whirl.

Shot entirely in 1st Person, so it’s at least ambitious, and if you liked that bit in Doom, you should enjoy it here.

It’s also utterly bonkers in terms of the action. Bad guy is suitably bad, and Sharlto Copley is clearly having a great time with his character.

For a bit of Saturday Teatime fun, I can’t say it’s not worth your time! In fact, for those of a certain Classic Vintage, this is very much the sort of film I’d have gladly rented out, when such a thing was a thing! And that’s a pretty decent endorsement in my book!

Just wish Netflix did trailer type compilations.

Behind the times abit on some but from Amazon Prime (that's a streaming service right?]

Top Gea....no no the Grand Tour! Second series is a lot better; dropping the silly exploding people gag (got old fast) and also the team feels far more relaxed into their roles and positions now. Series is good fun and a good laugh!

The Tick - didn't like it at first as it was quite a departure from the TV series. However grew to enjoy it. It's a slightly more mature take (in some areas) that mixes slapstick and adult humour well without resorting to just being overly crude. Neat ideas and in general fun to watch.

Preacher - love it and hope it gets another season. Lands at a run on the ground in season one and keeps going strong with its story in every episode. Dark and twisted yet also with a touch of humour and action. A story to make you wonder and guess and nearly every episode is varied and yet ends with a good hanger for the next one. Well written and cast its great fun!

Black Sails - only got started with this but already really liking it. It's a very different take on a pirate adventure and its nice to see a "real" angle on priates and how they might have operated outside of blind loyalty to the captain. Very mature in general.

Beyond the Borderlands - this had a slow first season and felt like it wasn't quite sure what it was trying to be. the action sequence are very well done, but it doesn't really come into its own until the second season. The first season builds up well, but its the second where characters are where they feel they should be and are acting in the world rather than reacting all the time. Crazy people; world gone mad in a post apoc future.

Designated Survivor - sort of 24 lite - with the gorgeous Maggie Q

@ Overread: Ohh Black Sails is fantastic - nice and complex and plenty of swapping sides - Hannah New is fantastic.- my fav character is Eleanor Guthrie - so much fun.

Into the Badlands is really good as well - would make a great RPG

We are waiting for Man in the High Castle to come back and in the meantime immensely enjoying I Zombie - especially since they are prepared to advance and evolve the story and characters - turgid shows like Walking Dead should learn form them

GLOW is good fun - well worth a watch.

Hap and Leonard I enjoyed enjoyed recently.

Wynonna Earp - still waiting for Season 2 to come on Netflix.

Really need to give The Tick another go, the pilot didn't seem Tickish enough so I didnt bother with it

Also Lucifer, the best version of Sherlock since House (the first two runs of Bendybuck Cabbageflaps lose points for the inane later dreadfulness)

I agree the opening didn't feel Tickish and it takes a little getting used too, but I think its one of those series that once you get past its introduction and get into it you can really like it for what it is. It is the Tick but not the same animated tick as we once knew.

I'd welcome a second season!

We enjoyed Lucifer alot to start with but I found it got a bit samey and very little changed or evolved, the last season was frankly a bit dull and all over the place. It still had moments but it felt like any episode could take place in any order really. Suffers baldy in the regard when compared to I Zombie.

I'll argee Seasons 2 and 3 did drag a bit with too many episodes for the story told, hopefully Season 4 will drop back to 10-13 episodes

They need to deal with Decker knowing whats going on and who he is - finally. Also can't have too much Ella - she is great.

The episode that was supposed to be about alt reality with Moms universe was a major let down I felt - especially since it was absolutely not that!

Lucifer I both like and hate - I think my main issue is how we don't see (at least by early season 2 where I'm at) a huge amount of Lucifer developing as a character - he's mostly the same slightly detached, self absorbed character whilst most those around him change. Which is an interesting way to see things ,but I do find him somewhat annoying as a character.

Still its entertaining and I want to see where it goes - even if the middle seasons are going to be a bit long in the tooth.

Anybody else watched Final Space? I will admit that at first I was slightly disappointed to see that it wasn't a continuation of Yahoo's Other Space, but I really got into this one very quickly. I liked the animation style and loved the characters, the story arc and in particular the presentation. Apparently due for a second season next year, genuinely enthusiastic about this one, if it's half as good as the first season I'll be happy.

Not a fan of Lucifer. The entire show seems to be a mock "She's a cop. He's the Devil. Together, they solve crimes!" spoken in that South Park announcer voice, and I just turned it off after that.
A shame, as the source material is absolutely mind-blowing in scope (and based on Gaiman's The Sandman for extra bonus points).
Final Space is great. I also have half a mind to re-watch the Stargate series to see how it stands up or dive into The Expanse next time I have a long trip away.

I also liked 2nd season much better than the first. . . especially since they ditched "The American" and opted for a good driver (even if she doesn't really display much personality. . . just her characteristic arcade racing game line at the start line)

I was watching Man in the High Castle (need to get caught up again), and PKD's Androids series. . .both were really well done, IMO. The Androids series is a number of one-off episodes based on his short stories, with a number of guest stars. IIRC, one episode featured John Malkovich.

We (my wife and I) recently wrapped up Father Brown (who looks suspiciously like one of my uncles) and are working our way through Death In Paradise (the most current season on Netflix) and Luke Cage (season 2).

I'm looking forward to the next season of Dark and of Last Kingdom.

Dark started out slow, but was really really good by the end. The layers within/atop layers was spectacularly good. It also really freaked you out in places without the need for any gore/violence. Just the setup/music raised the hackles in the way some of the old Twilight Zone (black and white) shows can.

Just started the newest season of Bojack Horseman. Was expecting more Hollyhock initially but I'm glad they're keeping it realistic with her staying at university. So far it's pretty good and once again they're on point with the Todd shenanigans. Only he could somehow pull off getting an exec position when he only applied to become a janitor.

I think Death in Paradise was better with the first actor. I still can't see the new chap as anyone but Nick Harper from My Family.

Humphrey gets replaced, eventually, by Thermoman. I don’t gravitate to crime shows, but both Father Brown and Death in Paradise have a great wonderful, subdued, dry, British wit to them. Nothing crass, just funny.

A gold star for bringing up Father Brown, a cracking little show hamstrung by the BBC fupwitted burying of it in weekday mid-afternoon limbo, its clearly a Sunday evening treat

Father Brown is good fun, but its never grabbed me to make me a regular watcher. It's one of those "oh its on I'll watch this" rather than "oh I must watch that".

Then again after Morse, Frost, Cadlfael, New Tricks, years and years of The Bill, the ITV adaptation of Sherlock Holmes*, NCIS**, Jag, Ripper Street***, Heartbeat, Midsummer Murders**** and probably several others that are slipping my mind at this point - after all that I've got a wealth of crime viewing

*which is the standard to which I measure any Holmes and Watson and was also surprisingly very faithful to the original story!
** ok that's less about crime and more about a quirky family dynamic set against some drama and some people getting killed
*** seriously surprised the BBC dropped that, but was very glad to see Amazon buy the entire program, cast set and all.
**** Another series marred by an actor change in the lead role in my view. Esp as the new person just looks like an estate agent in a suit. Then again he was trying to replace an actor who had made the role his own for years.

The Purge is an ok TV series. Only two episodes up at the moment, and seems to be building toward a pay off of some kind. Here’s hoping that doesn’t turn out to be a bounced cheque.

Also, Tales from the Crypt, the Amicus portmanteau. Just good fun Horror!
