How long have you been playing. I am interested to see what our current gaming population consists of.

I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you

I’ve been involved with 40K since 1987. I played 1E & 2E, then picked up again at the tail end of 5E (the year of my join date).

Overall, I don’t play 40K very often - I mostly collect, assemble, paint and gawk at the minis.

It never ends well

First played in 1994, with 2E, stopped in early 2000's, sometime shortly before 4E I believe. Recently came back for 8E, as now have financial stability again to get back into the hobby. Mostly hobbying, less gaming - but still enthusiastic about it all.

I started at the very beginning of 3rd (as in the first month). Played though until 6th dropped and I decided that if I wanted to have 90% of my list randomised I'd go play Dungeons and Dragons instead.

I started playing in RT with borrowed units of Squats. Near the end of RT I built my 1st army - a tiny, incredibly broken, all terminator, SW force.

I played like it was my job from 89 till 2004. I played 1 game of 5th decided I'd rather play anything else, and sold nearly all, only to return as 8th started to show it was a game and not the silliness 5th was.

Started in middle school '93 and got too cool for it in college '98.

Got back in touch with my nerdom in like 06-08 for 4th/5th but just didn't have the time.

Finally came back after all the hype for 8th.

Like KC above, started in 2nd edition early-mid 90's. Played through college into 4E...disliked it and gave it up. Started playing 2nd edition again in 2017, tried 8th edition and have been playing mostly that. Never thought I'd come back till the bones of 3rd edition were put to rest (thankfully!)

I started late in 3rd edition and have been active ever since. My most played editions were 5th and 7th due to a combination of Money, free time, and community with which to play. My least played edition was 6th mostly because I was in college and didn't have a community with which to play.

I've been playing tabletop games since early 90's and got into 40k at the release of 3rd edition - so that's 1997ish?

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

October 1998.

Only remember so vividly as it came out on my younger brother's 12th birthday and it was his prezzie.

Myself? I've been playing sporadically since 2nd ed. (mainly got into it through a prepainted game called Havok) then I went all in at the beginning of 3rd. Stopped at 6th, remained stopped during 7th as they double down on the dumbfethery and came back with 8th. As for my brother? He dropped out decades ago.

No. The beginning is Wharhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader.

I started playing around 1996 (tail end of 2nd), played consistently through to around 2002-4, then tapered off.

I then played on and off for about ten years, until the combined forces of AoS decimating Fantasy and the nonsense that was Formations in 7th led to me stopping playing entirely.

Then I got back in with 8th, and play fairly often, though other hobbies I've picked up in the meantime (drama and D&D) mean that I don't ply nearly as much as I used to. Haven't gotten back into Fantasy as yet, but I'm considering giving it a go.

First played rogue trader with custom rules (hoverboard deathball!), and a number of other systems around the time - notably epic.
Missed most of 3rd and 4th.
Played all of 5th regularly, and then trailed off to almost nothing by 7th.
Small scale resurgence in 8th, more modelling and painting now though.

I played Marines in early 5th edition, tried out a couple of chapters before converting them to CSM. I had the old 4th edition codex for like 2 years prior, just because I heard murmurs of 40k and I liked the cover.

6th edition killed it for me, everyone ran nothing but flyers and it was just such a clear cut case of writing OP rules JUST to sell models, that I ended up selling my CSM.

Now, 8th is a whole other beast. I ended up selling my old tomb kings army, and wanted to get back into 40k. The game is MUCH more balanced now I feel, and the few rules I enjoyed in 6th (allies!) is still around. Figuring out detachments was a little confusing, but I am honestly loving the rules this edition.

First started collecting back when it was Rogue Trader. My friends and I played WFB and thought we would dabble with small forces. Never actually got off the ground with playing, but I still have some of the models. The Ogryns back then were so damn cool.

A friend and I decided to take the plunge with 40K at the start of 6th edition, and have been playing since then.

I started in the beginning with rogue trader, using space orks, then went through the first few boxed editions collecting different armies but mainly marines of differing chapters.
Then had a break as beer and women became my main hobby.
Now I'm settled (...) I'm back into it in a big way, and have probably spent more in the last couple of years than all the previous years combined.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples
