Now that it’s 0 points, is the Hot-Shot Laspistol worth it on Tempestors? Half the range, more AP, no cost, less strength? Or, 4 strength, double the range, no AP, and costs a point?

If the truth can destroy it, then it deserves to be destroyed.

For myself, Plasma Pistols are dirt cheap and awesome... so I would always say take the PP instead. Good to pop a Grunt, or put a dent in something more valuable.

Plasma is cheap and good. You pay less than half the cost of a plasma gun, yet get half the fire power. However, I can see the hot shot being worth it with the drop formation, mainly because it can actually get within range to fire. I would still go with plasma though, it is too good. Also, with the drop formation warlord trait, you get +1 to hit. So you don't even have to worry about overheat.

For general use, the pistol allows you to shoot on 9" drops. If literally all you care about is the special weapons, then going with the cheap option works. Still, plasma pistol would be better.

TBH I used the hslp before CA, I will certainly continue after. On a squad that is going to die regardless (I run a few 5 man suicide squads) the difference is negligible.

Plasma pistol is an interesting answer though. Depends on how much you want to spend on your squad

The way I see it, if your 5 man squad could take 3 special weapons, you wouldn't take only two of them. A plasma pistol at 5 pts is half as effective as a plasma gun at 11. You don't get the doctrine shot for half range however, unless you use the new drop formation. So a sergeant is pretty much half a special weapon slot, which you can fill with half a plasma gun for half the cost of one. If you are going for a plasma drop squad it is a great choice.

I believe that +1 doesn't matter, it's a natural 1 and would still explode.

Keep in mind that the extra range of the bolt pistol will allow to shoot it on the turn you deep strike a squad which will usually die on the turn after. But I will echo other posters and say that plasma pistols are the better choice for Tempestors.

Plasma only explodes on a modified 1. You're mixing up two rules there.

Hot-shot laspistols are almost pointless on anything tempestus. Throw a krak grenade instead. Same range. Only shoot with the pistol in CC.

If you want to give your officer a pistol that actually does something go plasma or go home.
