Quick question: who would be for or against GW just going full X-wing and selling unit data sheets in card form in packs they update and bring out for £10 once a year?

Probably work

Eh. I print out the pages of the codex from the ebooks I use, stick them in a nice report binder, and then just pencil in the point values where needed. If they change, I have an eraser.

Assume all my mathhammer comes from here: https://github.com/daed/mathhammer

I’d be in for card-sized datasheets (and wouldn’t mind Upgrade cards to cover special weapons, loadouts and such). Already proved that by buying the Knight ones.

It never ends well

Definitely!

I wonder how it would impact codex sales?

I know I wont buy a Guard codex for my 1.5K army of guard that joins my Marines...but I would by the datacards like I bought the Strategems/Psychics deck.

How many others would just forgoe the codex altogether ?

if you mean like the AoS ones I'd be in for that like a shot, especially if they were reprinted each year with the errata & FAQ changes included, in a pack with any strategem cards that had changed (or all of them).

cards clearly marked with a date, coloured border etc so you know at a glance what the current ones are.

put the point values on them.

available as a stand alone product, done well I'd got for £25 an army with the cards and strategem cards, or say £15 if bought in a bundle with a codex

It's a good idea.
Sleeving unit cards lets you write on them with erasable marker, which is a good way to track wound counts during a game, along with stuff like psychic powers affecting a unit. Dice are always getting knocked over or picked up.

I actually made a bunch of data cards for my tyranids around the start of the edition. Never got around to updating them once the codex dropped though. Now that chapter approved is out, I might get back onto it.

They're seriously almost there for making dataslates a "card". I was expecting them to release with each codex in 8th:

Stratagems & objective cards
character cards
stat line cards

they're batting .333 not bad but...

it would be a really easy way to track wounds, psychic powers, etc. they should just take the rules and separate them from the fluff. You buy the now more badass codex with a ton of photos, painting stuff, army lists, historical info, etc... that they could include instead of all the dataslates.

Well. You would likely still need codex for points, army rules(dakkadakkadakka for orks etc), clan traits etc. You think GW would reduce things you need to buy?-)
