Do we have any examples of plasma coils on holstered weapons? I have Death Guard models where the Plasmagun is held on their backs.
These wouldnt be glowing, so what should they look like? Burnished metal? A copper color? A smokey grey? A lower, darker tone than the "live" coil?
I'm probably going with a green or a blue plasma coil.
Any advice?

I would go with a color that contrasts with your guns main color, so if it's a polished silver a mild-deeper bronze would look good. I vote go for contrast to add some visual interest.
Ok, cool. So I'll probably do a base, wash, and brighter highlight on the active plasma, and just do a base, wash, and base color highlight for the cooled plasma.
This is very interesting question, you made me think about it.
For now I have always painted it as glowing object, considering that it is more transparent hollow tube like thing. But maybe it's totaly opposite of it, and the coils should be metal of some kind. Even official graphics presenting this type of guns that they are made from metal.
