I'm starting up with Soul Wars and building 1000pts Nighthaunt from that.

Allegiance: Nighthaunt

Leaders
Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed (140)
- General
- Trait: Ruler of the Spirit Hosts
- Artefact: Midnight Tome (Shademist)
Guardian of Souls with Nightmare Lantern (140)
- Infernal Lantern (Artefact): Beacon of Nagashizzar
Spirit Torment (120)

Battleline
10 x Grimghast Reapers (140)
20 x Chainrasp Horde (160)
20 x Chainrasp Horde (160)

Battalions
Chainguard (120)

Total: 980 / 2000
Wounds: 66

I'm looking to build up to a 2000 pts army eventually. I found the Lord Executioner not to synergize very well and the Glavewraith Stalkers so-so in general. For this list I only have to buy another Chainrasp Horde and I've already purchased the Grimghast Reapers. What do you think?

This is a decently strong list without major flaws and has capacity to do well. But depending on your local meta it could be anywhere from too strong to barely viable, so be warned.

Generally speaking, grimghasts and chainrasps are a bit overpowered so anything based on that won't face issues unless you have a min-maxxy meta. But to describe glaivewraiths as 'so-so' is probably too kind!

Thank you! I've only played once so maybe I'll play those Glaivewraiths again and hate them properly ;-)

Here's a beginner question I hope someone could answer, should I even use my general in combat at all? He seems decently strong but charging him into the fray is just begging for him to get killed. However, keeping him back with the damage he could do also seems wasteful.

I understand I should keep my Guardian of Souls back, but what about my Spirit Torment too? He's not as important but still beneficial, and I would rather not lose him at all.

Nighthaunt heroes, for the most part, are squishier than equivalently priced heroes. Their much more useful cheerleading from the back and providing their buffs and 6+ FNP save than they are directly in the fray, with some exceptions.

Hey guys, I'm necroing this thread because I noticed something when playing this list. If I don't get my GoS Spectral Lure off, I don't get the 2d6+3 revived models for my battlelines. I feel like this is so critical to this entire list, it's kinda scary how easy it is to miss the spellcast or dispell the cast. Are there any armies I should be particularly scared of in this scenario? Can I improve this weakpoint in this list by not relying on my Chainguard battalion? If so, any suggestions how I could achieve this? Thanks in advance!

Here's what I'm thinking:

Remove the Spirit Torment and Knight of Shrouds and replace with Olynder. This gives good damage, and opens up points to add wounds. Then add 20 extra Chainrasps to fill in said wounds. More wounds initially on the board means less reliance on summoning to get wounds back. Add a Balewind Vortex for the GoS because we have the points and why not.

Allegiance: Nighthaunt

Leaders
Lady Olynder, Mortarch of Grief (220)
- General
- Lore of the Underworlds: Shademist
Guardian of Souls with Nightmare Lantern (140)
- Lore of the Underworlds: Lifestealer
- Infernal Lantern (Artefact): Beacon of Nagashizzar

Battleline
40 x Chainrasp Horde (280)
20 x Chainrasp Horde (160)
10 x Grimghast Reapers (160)

Endless Spells / Terrain
Balewind Vortex (40)

Total: 1000 / 2000
Extra Command Points: 0
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 82

Its a matter of changing the tactical thinking. Instead of viewing it as a weak point if it does not go off, see it as a strong point if it does. Play several games where you simply don't use it, get used to the tactics involved when it is not in play and how to manage that.

Then go back to using it again and be like 'OMG so easy!!'
