I'm just getting into the hobby and I'd love some inspiration, it would be awesome if you could post your first and last minis (or close to it). Even better if you're just an average Joe without an art background.

OG Ultramarine from when I was (I want to say) 11 (still have it sitting front and center in my display cabinet!)

One of my more recent (non-army) projects.

What do you think contributed the most to the difference in paint smoothness? Your current one doesn't look painted which AFAIK is the goal

I painted a few minis before this one but this marine is the starting point of my journey into the hobby, also I don't have the first painted mini anymore.

This is the first model I remember painting. I think I was 10-11 at the time, so ~16 years ago.

This is the latest group I finished a week ago. There have been a few breakes from the hobby, longest being three years. So it does not take that many years to get here.

I love how Modock's first painted miniature has really good blending, edge highlighting and painted on chipped weathering... my first model looked like a paint based accident in a blender factory

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

First model when I got back into painting about 4 years ago after a 15 year break.

And here's one I'm working on at the moment.

This is my first since returning to the hobby in 2014. I dont have any photos of my childhood models as we didnt have cameras everywhere back then. The rest are a couple of my recent pieces and my current WIP.

I "might" be able to find my first model? I'd have to take all new photos as it predates the entire internet by about five years.

Here's a pretty close comparison, though, from about 1995 to 2017:

While not truly my first painted models, my painting has improved glacially, so they are some indication of how things progress. Some of my Imperial Fists from around 2000:

Compared to the C'tan I painted two years ago:

In that time my camera got better, too.
