Hi,

Has anyone built, seen, or thought of any potentially sensible schemes for Black Legion that is not the standard plain black?

I want to run a splinter force or warband or something using black legion rules and daemon engines but I don't want them to be literally bog-standard black legion.

I was thinking if variations on the black theme, like:

White (Luna wolves) but with Black trim all over (black legion)
Teal (Sons of Horus) with Black trim all over (black legion)
Gold (black legion trim) with Black trim (inverted black legion?

Some other metallic with Black trim?

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Personally I'd go the opposite direction - black with a contrasting trim (in part because it would be easier to paint). So instead of the BL's traditional gold trim, perhaps a different metallic: silver, red or green? (Or even copper, but I suspect that would look too similar to gold.)

I'm going to be doing mine like first company sons of Horus, i.e. red pauldron and knee plates, just to break up the black a bit. Maybe some colour on select panels?

I think the BSF marines are Black Legion and I went for a teal/turquoise type scheme. I think they look ok.

Thanks for the ideas. I just don't want to commit some horrible chaos-paint-scheme faux-pas and encounter problems.

They're your models. Paint them however you like. The clue is in the name though really... If they aren't black I just wouldn't see them as black legion. This doesn't mean you cant make them stand out though. There are lots of effects you could do to black. Heavily chipped, weathered or rusted, charred black like it's been burnt, or some sort of OSL.

Yeah paint them how you want, but i would rather see armys in the orginal colors just to keep every thing making sense in terms of the 40k universe etc.

But yeah definitly do what you want man good luck.

Maybe gold with black/grey trim lol? i dont know. Just do the scheme or colors you like the most.

I have found this information in the Black Legion supplement:

Presumably, none of these guys would have black armor, yes?

The Wolves of Horus don't have a known colour scheme, but the True Sons and the Sons of the Eye both retained the Sons of Horus colours of teal and black. If you like those colours, then they're without a doubt the best bet for non-Black Legion coloured Black Legion

You could do a very, very dark blue instead of black.

One last point about the Black Legion supplement: worth it to look at the warbands for alternate color ideas.

The Hounds of Abaddon, Children of Torment, Sons of the Cyclops, and Bringers of Decay all have their own color scheme which is non-black. The Tormented and the Oath-Broken are also great conversion opportunities for people who want their Black Legion looking more Daemonic / Iron Warriors-ish.

Yes, I saw those, they were cool. Only thing is they all had at least half of their armor be black, which is a minor point I suppose.

I would have thought white or pale grey for the Wolves of Horus would be the obvious choice.
