We've been watching Wyloch on youtube as he and his buddies play different 40k armies using one page 40k (now GrimDark Future) rules.
Looks like a start collecting box plus a couple or three other units make a decent army for the game.

Anybody actually done the pew-pew test with these?

Right now I occasionally play the skirmish versions of both Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy, which use 90% of the same rules.

I really like them. The rules are simplistic, but there's something to be said for a game that is 90% gameplay, 10% learning the rules. Especially if for you, like me, games are very infrequent, so there's no need to constantly need rules refreshment before every game.

The biggest thing is if you don't like vehicles being treated like giant monsters (large hit point pools, etc), which in GDF they are.

I'm completely good with that. If I want fire arcs, there are more complicated games to play.

This is actually the only game I've had a chance to play so far with my minis. Granted, I played the skirmish spinoff, but it was easy to teach to a friend, and the games were mostly over pretty quickly.

We are getting ready to try these rules out soon. I loved 5th edition but hate everything after!! Way to many books and editions to keep up on we just want simplicity, speed and fun.

Having played a couple games of GDF and it does have a very 5th Edition feel to it.

We're supposed to play this weekend for the first time.
Does anyone use the objective cards that wyloch uses on his batreps?

We played GDF for the first time today.
My buddy fielded Death Guard equivalent
I brought priimaris but statted them as novel marines (regular guys had terminator stats, aggressors were heavy exo-suits).

The game went fast and the alternating activation helped keep us both engaged. His standard plague marines didn't have regeneration (equivalent to disgustingly resilient) and they folded very easily, but I think that list is being updated.

Anybody know if they are working on harlequin equivalents? Thanks

They are already there. Check out the mercenaries list for both inquisition and ‘jester elves’

So GDF is getting a thumbs up from everyone who has played it? I'll have to try and give it a shot sometime.

It has balance issues and you can break the game without a ton of trying but it gets toys on the table even more quickly than 8th edition (and I really like 8th ed).

Planning to give it a try with the 1/72 Guard and Ork armies, will post a report when it's ready

Played first game last night - 1000 pts Orc Marauders Vs Human Defense Force. Will post a batrep in the next few days but first impressions are really good, it's simple but not overly abstracted and very intuitive, you can dive straight in. Definitely recommend it for a quick knockabout

I still have yet to play GDF. Been getting the most use out of the (older) edition of Age of Fantasy: Skirmish, although I'll soon be updating to the most recent update for the army lists.

They have upped the cost of some of the tougher units, and now each unit may only fight once per turn in melee. Had a problem in the previous edition where a single Stormcast warrior could basically "take all comers" where they could fight multiple successive melee rounds, killing everything coming at them.

Glad I saw this thread, been looking for simple rulesets to introduce people to wargaming with and these look pretty straightforward and easy to use.

Played our second game today. My fluff marines (primaris count as terminators and aggressors count as exo-suit/centurion) versus my buddy's plague marines.

He took regeneration (aka disgusintgly resilient equivalent) and was much harder to fight this time around. Only really hit one rules question --- whether a hero can detach from a unit during the game----but we went with what wanted to do and everything turned out fine.

Battle report up! 1000pts, Orc Marauders vs Human Defence Force. Thoroughly enjoyable game, maybe a little over simplified but a great start ruleset for those getting in to the hobby. Remind me how many rulebooks/ codexes/ chapter approved you need to have to play 8th?

GDF's my go-to for when I get that 40k itch now, so much so that I've signed up to the patreon, which gets you the points calc system.

Looking forward to the Ratmen update to play more of my Mantic Veer-myn's.
A guy on the forum had also put up rules for AT-43's Karmens (space gorillas), so once I've tweaked that to my liking I'll be trying those out too.

I love writing rules so being able to play around with the point calc system is half the fun for me.

GDF does a lot of things well, I do prefer the previous version where models had a defence value that was needed to equal or beat to do damage.

However it is still a very enjoyable game, and my main go to with my 40K minis.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I find that the owning player rolling the defense keeps them better involved, though.

I'm probably going to become a $5 a month backer for a couple of months though, if only for the full, complete rulebooks and the points formula so I can add a couple of forces to Age of Fantasy: Skirmish.
