Planning to paint some Ultramarines bikers in sixth company colours and was wondering if they should wear the tactical unit badge on their bikes and armour or if they would switch to an assault badge when on bikes?

It would normally be the tactical arrow, but you could be different and use the dark angels sideways tactical arrow instead and they could be either

I thought bikers were assault marines not tactical so they would uses the assault symbol as show on the box art work, but then technically extra bikers would be drawn from the 8th company rather than the 6th

4th company 3000pts
3rd Navy drop Command 3000pts air cavalry
117th tank company 5500pts
2000pts

The 6th Company is a Tactical company, as far as the Tactical marines go.

They are supported by Dreadnoughts, Rhinos and Bikes.

The bikers are not Tactical marines on bikes, they are bikers.

Assault markings would logically be correct.

Please

The first company is elite
The second to seventh are TACTICAL
The eighth is assault
The ninth is devastator
The tenth is scout

The 6th reserve company is tactical that are trained to use bikes if they wish to

By your logic, the 2nd company, being Tactical, all wear Tactical insignia.

Even though the image shows 6 Tactical, 2 Assault and 2 Devastator squads.

I’m assuming that’s a typo on his part. Second through Fifth are the battle companies, and have always been mixed. Six and Seven are pure tacticals, and while they do work extensively with bikes/speeders respectively, should display tactical squad markings.

This is correct. I remember 7th Ed Codex SM had a detailed breakdown of the insignia schemes. Bikes themselves have only a number inside a coloured circle to show allegiance to a specific company, while the markings on a Marine's shoulders should be enough to show more detailed breakdown. I'd imagine that given the 6th Company are a full Tactical Reserve company, they all wear Tactical Arrows. I'd doubt they'd repaint them every mission or every other mission just because this week they're on foot vs bikes, which probably DOES change week to week.

Remember, its not that 6th are a full biker company, or 7th a full Land Speeder company. They are both Tactical Companies, who's main job is to replace losses in the Battle Company 6 Tactical Squads, but 6th is entirely trained in mounted combat and 7th in Land Speeder, while 8th is trained in both.
