Hi, I'm currently planning out a Tau army, but am worried about whether it is worth taking some options due to the chance of them being/ becoming legend options in the future.
I have already had a SM army totally gutted by the reccent changes, so I am cautious about making the same mistake again.

So with that said I have two questions I hope people might have the answers to:

i) Are there any current Tau legend units to avoid? My internet searches didn't find any, but I'd like to ask just to make sure.

ii) I'm looking at taking some heavy gun drones. I don't think they are legend units, but do you think they will become one in the near future?

Thanks

Tau are a fairly up-to-date plastic range, I don't expect anything's going to get shunted into Legends anytime soon (stuff in Legends mostly consists of options they don't make specific models for). Space Marines are more vulnerable to stuff becoming Legends options than most armies simply because the kitbashing potential of the range led designers in older editions to give you options that GW's current "no rules for things not on the instruction booklet of a kit" attitude doesn't want you to do.

I would advise avoiding Forge World models if you're worried about their rules, though, as they tend to get less attention from the design team than their plastic counterparts.

Yeah, that was my understanding of it too, thanks.

I just wish they could provide some concrete rules regarding what will or will not be removed.

In my SM army my standard dreads and venerable dreads can't have autocannons now as they are not produced any more......except for mortis dreads which are the exact same model which can use them.

Named characters would be the only thing I'd worry about. Moving the setting forward a few centuries kind of messes with them and nobody stays in cryostasis forever. Hopefully GW will eventually reveal a new, non-holographic space pope.

I mean, isn't that the rule? "they are not produced anymore"
If the "current" kit doesn't have the option then that option is something that could end up in legends.

AFAIK The only place in the Tau 'dex where a model can take something it doesn't come with is the Crisis suit - there are no fragmentation projectors or ion blasters in that kit.

Other than that, I don't think you have to worry about any of the "current" tau models except that Shadowsun is getting a new model in like a month so I'd avoid the old one unless you really like it.

I'd think it'd be more likely they'd just retcon their dates of birth and/or give the Tau something like Imperial juvenat treatments; they don't like killing off named characters. Eldrad died in a campaign back in 3e and come 4e he's back up on his feet running around feeling entirely okay. The only named characters they've made models for that I know are definitively dead are all Forge World 30k people (most of the 40k CSM characters were second-fiddle captains in 30k with an immediate boss who dies dramatically at some point in the storyline, ex. Lucius (who's still around) and Eidolon (who isn't)).

They were metal experimental bits in the Commander kit in 4e, but got put into the standard Crisis team kit in 6e. They do only give you one gun in the kit of three models just to irritate people who like the weapon, but it's definitely in the kit.

Its' also worth pointing out that the only things that were moved to Legends were units or options that did not move from the Index to the Codex.

In other words, if it's in your codex, there's no foreseeable risk of it becoming a legend.

Er, no. You will not find a single Airburst Fragmentation Projector or Cyclic Ion Blaster in the Crisis kit (I've built 6 of them in the last few months so I know this for a fact), the only place you will find them is the Commander kit, which has one of each.

Tau are one of the lucky armies that have had nothing go to Legends, and aren't likely to in the near future.

Ethereal with Symbols of Office is a likely candidate.

Other than that, I imagine not. XV15 are legal to use as Stealth Suits still, for example. And unless single Burst Cannon is removed as an option for them in the future, they always will be.

I can see Forge World dropping some things, like Tetras and their older Crisis variants.

I imagine Vespid, Kroot Hounds and Krootox will all be updated to plastic soon-ish. None of them are really "droppable".
