Subject: 1500 pts, Imperial Fists primaris marines vs Ultramarines classical marines, this saturday
Hi guys,
I'm getting ready for my next maps and pictures battle report between my friend's all new and shinny contrast-painted Imperial Fist army against my own old school Ultramarines successor army.
The new world against the old one. Who is gonna prevail ? Let's find out this saturday !
His list will be the following, with a few adjustements:
Spoiler:
===HQ===
Captain in gravis armor with boltstorm gauntlet and master crafted power sword
Lieutenant with power sword
===ELITES===
1 primaris apothecary 1 redemptor dreadnought with heavy onslaught gatling cannon, onslaught gatling cannon, stormbolters and icarus pod
===HEAVY SUPPORT===
1 repulsor executionner with heavy laser destroyer
6 centurions devastatorwith hurricane bolters and heavy bolters
10 hellblasters with plasma incinerators
That's all he has painted, so if he wants to play fully painted he has no choice. Maybe his ancient will be paintes, we'll see !
For my list, I have decided to play on my strenghts of classical marines: special weapons, drop pods, msu and some assault units with the points left.
Ultramarines successors, master artisans, marksmen
Spoiler:
===HQ===
Captain with jump pack, plasma pistol and Teeth of Terra
Chaplain with jump pack and plasma pistol
Librarian Lieutenant
===ELITES===
10 sternguard veterans with SIA
5 vanguard veterans, 2 with thunder hammers
1 apothecary 1 company ancient 3 company veterans with plasma guns
===TROOPS===
3 *5s couts 3*10 tactical marines with 1 ML, 1 plasma gun and 1 combi-plasma
===HEAVY SUPPORT===
5 devastators with 4 ML 5 devastators with 4 grav cannon
===TRANSPORTS===
1 drop pod with stormbolter
I will split my tactical squads in two, playing msu and mini dev to take advantage of my Master Artisans trait to get lots of rerolls. My list is, I think, surprisingly well rounded to face primaris marines (lots of D2+ weapons) for a list I had done earlier. I fear for my walking tactical plasma bearers though: without any protection, not even cover (vs IF), they will be dead before the end of T2.
I have been trying to play without vehicles for some time now and this negates half of his doctrine, so it's pretty good.
But, even if I use scions of Guilliman and have some sternguards, he still has range advantage and is a tough nut to crack with 2 wounds on every guy and some serious armoured vehicles (he will probably be half reducing the redemptor damages).

So the game happened ! I will make and post the maps tomorrow (sorry !), I have to celebrate my birthday tonight. Due to painted models constraints, our lists were eventually the following:
Thunder Knights 1500pts list and picture:
Spoiler:
Ultramarines successors, master artisans and hungry for battle
captain with relic sword and stormshield Lieutenant Chaplain with jump pack
10 sternguard veterans 10 vanguard veterans with 3 thunder hammers 1 ironclad dreadnought with hurricane bolters 5 assault terminators with 3 thunder hammers
2*1 tactical squad with plasma gun, combi plasma and missiles launcher 5 scouts 6 scouts with 1 heavy bolter
5 devastators with 4 missiles launchers 1 vindicator with hunter killer missile
1 drop pod
Imperial Fists 1500pts list and pictures:
Spoiler:
Imperial Fists
1 captain in gravis armor with gauntlet and sword 1 lieutenant with power sword
1 ancient with stalker bolter rifle 1 redemptor dreadnought with onslaught heavy gatling and onslaught gatling
4*5 intercessors with stalker
6 centuruons devastators with heavy bolters 1 repulsor executionner
My friend is to go a small tournament next week and wanted to try the rules by which he will be playing there: there are 5 objectives, and you score 1VP for each one of them at the end of your turn except the one at the center which is worth 3. No KP and there is Maelstrom of war too.
I have the initiative.
DEPLOYEMENT: I deploy 1 half tactical squad with a ML on my right flank tall black building, and another one behind the low left building. I deploy my devastators in the red building deep inside my deployement zone. The chaplain, lieutenant, sternguards and vindicator are all on my right flank, at the tall black building while my scouts are on the center objective and on the objective of the left flank. My captain, ironclad and vanguards are hidden behind this building.
He deployes his centurions on his left flank and screen them with a 5 men intercessor squad. He deploys his repulsors deep inside his left flank too. All his character in the middle, one squad at the rear to screen, one on the right and one in front. The redemptor is on the right flank.
Spoiler:
T1 TK: I have the initiative, some firepower and most of the objectives. I move the vindicator a little bit toward the centurions, that I know are quite powerful, to try his "new" 1D6 cannon and to use its S10 against their T5. I move the sternguards a little bit to their left, in order to be in range of a small intercessors squad outside of the range of the Ancient and that holds an objective. Nothing else move. Shooting phase and, of course, my vindicator misses all his shoots despite me having used a stratagem to count it has no having moved. My sternguards, using the +1 to wound stratagem, destroy the small 5 men squad. First strike ! Some ML wound the redemptor and my opponent halves its wound, and thus takes only 3. I score about 6VP (3 because of the middle one, 2 for 2 others and 1 for a maelstrom).
Spoiler:
IF: My opponent starts by moving a 5 men squad toward the center of the table with his redemptor, and bring his officers close to his centurions. Nothing else really move. Shooting phase, when I finally understand what "competitive" and "overpowered" means:the repulsor fire its heavy laser destroyer 4 times to my vindicator, wounding it 13 times without any save, destroying it in a salvo. And then proceeds to kill the full squad of sternguards. And it didn't even shoot all of its weapons, some not having the range. The centurions then open fire, killing the 6 men scouts squad holding an objective in my deployement zone and two 5 men tactical squads with ML. Wow. His intercessor squad assault my scout in order to take the center objective, kill one scout and lose 1 intercessor. He scores about 4 or 5 VP
Spoiler:
T2 TK: I'm going with the tactical doctrine, I need to move. I wasn't ready to lose so much in a single shooting phase by two units. But reinforcements are coming ! The terminators teleport close to the centurions, and the drop pod drops between an intercessor screen and the repulsor. If I cannot outgun him, I'll out move him and deny him objectives. I can win by points. My devastator squad leave its useless cover and move forward (at that time I think I have to leave my deployement zone to score 1VP, but it is actually the opposite, I need 3 units in it ). My Ironclad, chaplain and vanguard veterans all move toward the center: the objective is to engage all the Imperial Fists troops that left their deployement zone.
Spoiler:
A sight is taken
Shooting phase and a first tactical squad delete the intercessor screening squad while the other squad put 6 wounds to the repulsors. The devastator squad, using a CP to reroll, finish it. When it explodes my opponent makes it fire its onslaught gatling and it kills 6 vanguard veterans
Spoiler:
Melt this steel beast, brother !
Assault phase and all my charges are made: the redemptor is destroyed (with 1 vv in overwatch), the intercessor squads on the objective is destroyed by the ironclad and the chaplain and the terminators destroy the last intercessor squad that was in the centurions' building (and thus contact them).
Spoiler:
I score again and I have 11VP.
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
IF: My opponent lost a lot and suddently has a lot fewer options. He brings all his characters in the centurions' building but send the lieutenant towards the VV. He cannot shoot, can he ? He can: he used a stratagem to count all of his centurions' weapons as pistols, and shoot my terminators to death. His lieutenant charge and kill my VV, taking their objective.
Spoiler:
He scores and is now at 11VP.
Spoiler:
T3 TK: At this time, I think we are at Turn 5 and that it is the last turn. I am still using the tactical doctrine. I send my tactical squad away, making them advance, and hide them. My ironclad and the chaplain move toward the lieutenant. My devastator move toward a line of sight blocking building, but do not advance. They shoot the centurions but cannot by pass their cover. The lieutenant is dealt with and I take the objective.
Spoiler:
My own lieutenant is still holding an other objective and getting my points.
19VP
Spoiler:
IF: Still using the devastator doctrine. Using his last forces, he shoots the devastator squad and the scouts still on the center objective and put my ironclad down to 3 wounds despite me having used the stratagem. 17 VP
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
We stopped here as it was getting less interesting and my opponent couldn't really score anymore, I was pretty sure to have always more VP than him every turn.
OLD MARINES VICTORY ! 19-17
POST BATTLE THOUGHTS: What a slaughterhouse ! My opponent didn't have enough units to screen correctly unlike he is used to. He didn't actually had a lot of choices for his list, using only what I had painted. So he had very poweful units (the IF centurions devastator are insane !) but the list wasn't really good. The IF have some truly naughty stratagems and tactics (+1 to cover, +1 HIT with each 6, shooting in melee...). I did a poor T1 because of luck, forgetting my rerolls, and target priority: it was the first time I faced centurions, I didn't they were that poweful ! Super interesting game, especally as my opponent usually plays assault armies. My CT were SUPER useful !
EDIT you know what ? I just noticed I played 1700pts instead of 1500. And that's why I had so many more men: the vanguard veterans weren't part of the list apparently. I can't believe I did that, I'm using battlescribe, it should have been easy to spot...
