I would strongly advise against using a Primarch at 1,000pts. You can if you really want to (Primarch's Chosen bypasses the 25% rule) but they're very format-warping and it can feel very unfair to the other person if they're not also taking a Primarch. I prefer to advise people to build a 1,000pt list as a stepping-stone to a 2,000pt/2,500pt list that does include the Primarch. If you are determined to start at 1,000pts with the Primarch I'd still strongly advise you make sure you have the models for a version of the list without the Primarch.
The Imperial Fists are a very flexible Legion; you've got slight buffs to a lot of things rather than large buffs to one thing, your unique units/equipment give you slightly better melee veterans (Templar Brethren), slightly better Terminators (access to storm shields, Deep Strike in any Rite, and the assault cannon), and slightly better Breachers (Phalanx Warders, note that you need the FAQ beta version or they're very overpriced (the way non-beta Breachers are)). Storm Shields mean you should at least consider taking Terminator characters where possible.
Generally the first decision you should make when building a list is which Rite of War you're going to use. I tend to advise people take Pride of the Legion when they're just starting off since it puts Tactical Veterans (whose squad size and weapon options resemble 40k Tacticals) in Troops, which makes it easier/cheaper to get started with a 30k army than the squads of 10-20 bolter Tacticals that are your normal Troops.
Pride of the Legion also makes Terminators into Troops, and Imperial Fists particularly can build strong lists around a core of Terminators. The Legion Terminator squad can be built in a variety of ways, particularly with Imperial Fists options:
-First consider the variety of Terminator armour. There's no advantage to Indomitus (the standard 40k pattern) over Tartaros so generally your choice will be between Tartaros and Cataphractii; Tartaros can Run if they're too far from the fight and can Sweep if they win combat, Cataphractii have a better base Invulnerable save and pay less for Storm Shields. I advise you use Cataphractii if you've got a delivery mechanism other than walking around the table (Land Raiders, teleporting) and Tartaros for baseline walking-around-the-table squads.
-General kit: I advise trying to keep your Terminators cheap where possible; they may be able to shrug off small arms fire, but they're still only T4 1W models, and they can be blasted down by volume of fire. I tend to aim for two powerfists or chainfists per five models rather than loading up entirely with powerfists; it lets you keep the AP2 hitting power but the squad is cheaper and you have some power swords to hit at I4. Similarly I tend to take one or two combi-weapons rather than loading the whole squad up with combi-weapons.
-Storm shields: They're very in-character for the Imperial Fists, and in the Stone Gauntlet Rite of War they can get you T5, but 10-15pts/model is horrendously expensive. If you're taking one squad by all means load it up with storm shields, but if you're using Terminators as the core of your list I'd suggest taking a character bodyguard squad with storm shields and some other Terminators without or squads with just a couple of storm shields.
-Heavy weapons: The default list of heavy flamer, Reaper autocannon, and plasma blaster is extended by the Imperial Fists with the Iliastus assault cannon. Which you use is dependent on what you want the squad to do; in a small game the assault cannon is the most flexible option, but the plasma blaster is better if you're expecting to fight a lot of armoured infantry and the autocannon has the advantage of range if you're playing a mission with spread-out objectives.
As to Dreadnaughts there are a number of different unit entries with different special rules; in small games I'd advise using the basic Castaferrum or a Contemptor-Cortus equipped with a gun and a melee arm for maximum flexibility and minimum points. An autocannon or a multi-melta for cheap anti-armour, a melee arm for whacking things, and a heavy flamer on the melee arm for clearing infantry is 135/140pts on a Castaferrum (who gets side AV12 and WS5) or 145/150pts on a Contemptor-Cortus (who gets front AV13, the front-arc invulnerable save, and is faster).
At 1,000pts one possibility (not including Dorn) might look like:
-Legion: Imperial Fists. Allegiance: Loyalist. Rite of War: Pride of the Legion
HQ:
-Praetor: Tartaros armour, storm shield, grenade harness, Solarite power gauntlet (180)
--(Mandatory HQ, gives access to the Rite, and is quite good at punching both people and things.)
-Tartaros Terminator Bodyguard: Standard-Bearer with assault cannon and chainfist, 3 Chosen with power swords and storm shields (220)
--(Serves as a cheaper small Terminator squad to bodyguard for the Praetor, they can tank challenges if you run into someone like a Salamanders Praetor that you don't want to be in a challenge with)
Elites:
-Legion Dreadnaught Talon: 1 model with multi-melta, DCCW, heavy flamer, two hunter-killer missiles (145)
--(You could replace this with a Contemptor-Cortus for the same price without the hunter-killer missiles built out of the plastic Contemptor kit if you wanted; it'd be faster and tougher from the front but less tough from the sides and with only WS4 wouldn't be as accurate in melee. In either case his job is to hang with the command squad and whack tanks.)
Troops:
-Tartaros Terminator Squad: 3x swords and storm shields, 1x assault cannon and chainfist, 1x Sergeant with grenade harness, combi-melta, and chainfist (282)
--(Generalist squad kitted to wander around the table and hit things. Storm shields cut down on your firepower, but the assault cannon lets you engage most targets, and the combi-melta is extra insurance for running into Dreadnaughts)
-Tactical Veterans: 3x stock, 1x missile launcher, 1x Sergeant with power sword. Dedicated Transport: Rhino with dozer blade. Veteran Tactics: Machine Killers (175)
--(Mobile firepower. Lets you stun things further back that your Terminators can't get to yet, and lets you grab out-of-the-way objectives while still projecting firepower into the game.)
Total is 997pts and would take ten Tartaros models, a Dreadnaught, five Veterans, and a Rhino; it's not fast but it's tough and hard-hitting.
