So I'm returning to the Hobby after a few years away and am looking to start a Salamanders List.

Looking to make a small list for ZM games that can be then expanded on for larger games.

So roughly for $1k I was thinking the following.

HQ

Centurion/Praetor - This is actually probably where I feel I'm struggling to decide in this list, I feel like Centurion w/ Consol that the 15 extra points may as well be spent for the full Praetor who when fully equipped seems to be quite pricey for $1k.

ELITES

Contemptor/Box Dread - Either Dual CCW with Heavy Flamers or MM with Heavy Flamer / Flamestorm Cannon & CCW with Heavy Flamer.

Fire Drakes - Squad of 5 All with TH/SS maybe a Heavy flamer.

TROOPS

Tactical Squad - Nuncio-vox (if deep striking the Firedrakes), SGT with MC Power Fist & Melta Bomb.

Then round it out with Either a Tactical Support Squad with Flamers or Heavy Support Squad with Heavy Flamers maybe one of each could be taken with some point shifting.

Other option I was thinking was swapping out the tactical & support squad for Breachers with Flamers at I hear they rock in ZM.

Any help or feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Firedrakes are very expensive; sure they're killy, but five with TH/SS is 350pts. I'd suggest sticking to regular Terminators and trying a varied loadout so they can fill multiple roles rather than doing hammer/shield on everyone.

Consider Pyroclasts over flamer support/heavy support squads; they're more expensive, but the 2+ armour can be hard to deal with and the melta mode makes them hugely more flexible.

On HQs: Absolutely consider the Delegatus, especially in Salamanders. He may not hit as hard as a Praetor but 115pts buys you a Rite of War, Cataphractii armour, a storm shield, and a powerfist, and he'll still chew up and spit out most of the things he'll meet in a 1,000pt ZM game.

On Dreadnaughts: Most of the time in ZM/small games you're looking for the all-rounder pick rather than the specialist; the flamestorm boxnaut is terrifying in some contexts, but he has some bad matchups (Terminator-heavy lists, Custodians) and is pretty helpless outside flamer range if there are any long corridors on your map, so people can just sit back and take potshots while he waddles at them. As a generalist tool I'd suggest a Contemptor-Cortus with assault cannon and fist/flamer; the assault cannon lets you threaten pretty much any target and gives you some stand-off power if you can't pop around a corner straight into flamer range.

On Breachers: They're still pretty overpriced; use them if you really like them, but regular Tacticals will do the same thing better most of the time.

Be aware that as you're taking either a Praetor or Delegatus you've got access to a Rite of War that may let you take alternate people in Troops. Covenant of Fire (Pyroclasts, non-compulsory only), Pride of the Legion (Veterans, Terminators), ZM Assault Force (Terminators, non-compulsory only), and Chosen Duty (Veterans) are all worth considering.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Thanks for the Feedback.

Actually dropping to a Cortus dread & legion terminators makes the list a little easier to fill without an awkward amount of points left over.

Salamanders 1000 point ZM List.

ROW: Convent of Fire

HQ:

Delagatus - Terminator Armour, Powerfist, Storm Shield - 110

ELITES:

Contemptor-Cortus Dreadnought - Assault Cannon, CCW w/ Heavy Flamer -160

Legion Terminator Squad 235
2x - TH & SS
2x - Power Fist & SS
1x Heavy Flamer & Power Sword

TROOPS:

Tactical Squad - Sgt w/MC Power Fist - 145

Pyroclasts - Sgt w/ Power Fist - 175

Pyroclasts - Sgt w/ Power Fist - 175

Only concerns now are do I try get a couple combi-weapons in the terminators (Combi Meltas to make the most of COF)? also should I perhaps change the Delagatus to Artificer Armour and the terminators tartros?

I know Nocturne Born reduces run moves by 1" but with not a whole lot of shooting in that unit it may help them get up the board quicker and they'll still have the 5+ from the shields.

Mind that the Salamanders storm shield is +1 to existing Invulnerable saves rather than a flat 3++; it's almost always better used on Cataphractii.
