Also not particularly sure they can re-capture the magic on a sequel. Especially on a mountain trek expedition. That's a little too impersonal.
Though with the new trailer, I'm suddenly less sure what its about. Apocalypse happening, I guess.

What's the deal with Epic? I know a lot of people don't like it, but I don't know enough about them to really know why. I know they're Chinese based, which is enough to dissuade me from using them, but aside from that, is there any real problem with them?

They brought the consol war like Monopolisation of Games to plattforms to the PC sphere.
Instead of Building up a propper competitor plattform to Steam they throw money at gaming studios for exclusives.
They bought Game released initially planned on steam out and made them exclusive.
For supposedly beeing pro developper they are not willing to lend a helping hand to indi game devs that would also prefer multi plattform releases, instead they gave that right to ubisoft whilest said indi dev got nothing, meanwhile they tout a holier then thou attitude especially torwards steam.
Fortnight, is the parade exemple of a life service blight with illegal childgambling via lootboxes, season passes, etc, whilest still touting they are gods gift to game devs and consumers..
And yes Tencent behind so no privacy
Yeah it's a bunch of monopolistically intended hypocrits.

Its a lot of things.
1) The storefront is awful. Usability and access for the consumer side just isn't a concern. Security doesn't seem to be much of one either.
2) Shady dealings. This is both a matter of what data they have access to, what they're doing with it and the deals they're reaching with developers to put exclusives in on their platform.
It gives them an unspecified hold on these developers, and many small developers are desperate enough for money that they're not thinking through long term possibilities. Its quite possible that some developers are going to run on Epic money, and then get the rug yanked out from underneath them in 3-5 years.
Its also can prioritize games based on how much Epic is paying, not if they're actually any good.
And yeah, games that were advertised elsewhere then pulled to be 'Epic Exclusives' was a crap move on the part of both Epic and the developers involved in that sort of crap. Especially the ones that were kickstarted and promised Steam and/or GOG keys as part of the Kickstarter. There were a couple breaches of contracts there as far as I'm concerned. Doesn't necesssarily apply to DD2 (afaik), but there were several games last year where the developers hung their backers out to dry for Epic money.
3) Exclusives are inherently anti-consumer. With no choice of where to buy a product, the seller has all the leverage. Some of the 'first hit is free' sales approaches also just rub me the wrong way. They're paying for access to the audience, not profit, which raises questions about motivation.
----
And with recent talk about other companies (like the whole TikTok thing), there are other issues that may come up in the future. Like one or more countries banning TenCent, and therefor Epic, and losing access to anything you bought on the platform. This isn't a reality yet, but clearly there is flirting with the idea. And TenCent and subsidiaries are shady enough that I'm not sure its unjustified.

Epic has also had a rather high number of data breaches for their running life. I wouldn't put any financial info on their platform, but I'm perfectly content to wait until it can be purchased on Steam.

I personally enjoy the new direction. It's a pretty clear play on At the Mountains of Madness, so I'm glad they're accentuating the Lovecraft elements for the sequel. I'm hoping that the cold can provide for some particularly grueling survival elements as well, what with bringing enough to eat and not dying of hypothermia. It's a nice change from the relatively safe locales of the first game.
Also, in case, anyone doesn't know, the full release will be on Steam as well as Epic, it just makes ignoring the spoilers a bit harder while the game's in early access.
I finished the first one a few years ago. Looking forward to the sequel but I’m really hoping that it’s not just more of the same. They’ve already revealed that it’s the same cast of characters. I don’t particularity care for that. Was hoping for a new set of degenerates and scum to go fight evil with. I do like the shift to a mountain expedition from a dungeon crawl. Overall I doubt it’ll be as interesting as the first one. Oh but do remember that the first one spent a long time in early access and changed quite heavily over time. If I recall correctly the final (darkest) dungeon wasn’t implemented until the game was almost out of early access.
His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

What other sort of character would you like to see implemented?
I think Redhook did a really good job in covering such a wide range of characters. There's not many gaps that I can see that they've left for other unique, useful heroes.

Nothing in particular. I agree that the cast is impressive. The art and feel for each character is very good. It's just that I feel a bit same old same old with the same cast. You could easily make a different set of characters that fulfill similar roles. Like let's say a witch that summons powers of nature (thorns, bees, heals) similar to the occultist. Maybe a thief that works like the graverobber. You could have a bear tamer do a cross between the jester and the houndmaster. For straight military classes there's no end of potential. Like a mercenary, militiaman, gladiator or caravan guard. You could even have some classes based on the classes or enemies in game one. Like lets say for instance the son of Reynauld who maybe grew up to be a monk? Or a half man half fish thing from the cove on a path of redemption (similar to the abomination). I am not at all unhappy about the existing classes. For a sequel though I feel like a new cast would inherently bring a new feel to the game.

They might be a bit hesitant on that. The musketeer was basically that for the arbalest. I'm not really sure that went over too well, even as a FLC (of a preorder or kickstarter bonus). The big thing people complained about it was that it had its own set of trinkets, which with the limited inventory space, didn't go over well.
I don't know they found the extra time/cost for a new model and animations really worth it.
----
That said, its early days. I'd be very surprised if there were no new classes at all, revealed closer to release.

I'd actually really like another dedicated healer class. The vestal is great, the occultist is hit and miss at the best of times and downright unhelpful at the worst. A 3rd dedicated healer with better support skills would have been great.
A mix of vestal/plague doc/antiquarian/arbalist.
Heal/Party heal with something to cure bleed/blight and then something to buff and clear stun/debuffs. Which honestly would be a pretty formidable character and as I write this I realise why the probably didn't include a hero like this.
The musketeer was a reskinn of the Arbalest right? With the exception of unique trinkets. I wasn’t really talking about reskinns but rather new chars. I realize you’re going to need tanks, dmg dealers, buffers and so on. So new chars would need to fill similar roles as the old ones. Since the game came out of early access we got a few new characters. The flagellant and shield breaker where included afterwards. I’m not certain but I think the abomination and the antiquarian where also implemented post release. So it’s not like they havn’t invented new stuff post release. It’s all arbitrary anyway since we know they’ll stick with the same cast. With the exception of some possible yet unrevealed new additions.

But we already have a third dedicated healer. The Crusader's been allowed in slot 3 since the game's inception
feth Epic. feth anyone who sells out to them. If EA taught me anything, it's how to hold a grudge against game developers and publishers who actively make the market a worse place and offer nothing in recompense.
Guess I'll just go and enjoy the board game when that hits (if it hits).
