Hey, I'm Dan! My friend and I recently decided to get into 40K, starting out with Imperial Guard for me and Orks for him. I've got the rulebook and codex and I'm looking forward to finding cool resources on here to make it all a little easier to understand. As the title says, I have zero experience with any war gaming. I haven't played anything and I'm still building an army. So far, I've got three Leman Russ battle tanks and three of the boxes of ten Cadian Shock Troops. I'm working towards getting three Wyverns in the next week or so and I'm hoping to get a game in with my friend in the next month. I can't say I care much at all about the 40K lore, but I'm very enthusiastic about learning the gameplay as well as model assembling and painting. Any tips for a beginner are greatly appreciated!

Hey bud, love the handle. Pantera!
I'd say go with the Manticore over the Wyvern for gameplay it's much better right now, but go with what models you like first 'cos rules change. Kudos for playing guard.

Speaking as someone who drives past the Alrosa Villa in C-bus, a lot, I immediately associated your name
One of the big things I struggled in wargaming, is .. being attached to my troops. Both Ork and IG players should not get emotionally attached to their grunts.. cause they die like flies..
If you CAN, try to magnitize the LR turrets to swap out barrels so you can try different configurations of tanks

Manticores look pretty cool! I'm actually working toward an army I got from this list: https://nightsatthegametable.com/astra-militarum-tactics-beginners-guide/
I don't know how good that list is, but it's pretty straight forward and seems easy for a beginner and most importantly looks fun. I'm not really concerned with points for starting out as my friend and I are pretty agreed in starting out Open Match games until we get the hang of it, so I am open to pretty much anything. Thanks to everyone saying hey! I'm thinking about stopping by the local Warhammer store tomorrow and I'll probably get a Wyvern or two. Maybe a Manticore if they've got one!

Welcome, Dicebag! Glad to have a new enthusiast. If you're going to be painting lots of vehicles, consider investing in an airbrush. Once you know how to use it, it can save you loads of time and effort and unlock a lot of cool techniques.

I'm replying just to let you know that I appreciate a lot the fact that you say "Imperial Guard" despite being a brand new 40K player.
Also if you're both new, maybe try a more varied approach to model purchases and army building?
1) You don't risk one-sided games as much with varied armies. It can happen if you accidentally buy a lot of very strong models vs your friend's a lot of weaker ones.
2) You get to know the game better if you use things that work differently and offer a variety of challenges (as far as 40K does that ofc).

I agree with the varied approach! But my friend and I also considered that we might want to get in on games with others since we know people who also play and both wanted something that would be more competitive so we looked a some lists. This is a pretty expensive hobby to get into and we wanted to be sure we were spending money on the right things.
As for the airbrush for painting vehicles, it's definitely something I'm considering once I get my troops painted first.
Great advice, thank y'all!
