How do?
As I’m starting to feel the painting big properly settling in, some of the tutorials I’m finding on YouTube make use of non-Citadel paints.
This can be a little daunting, as they rarely stop to explain why they’re using a given one. Though some do say “paint X is pretty much the same as Citadel Colour Y”.
I know not all paints are created equal, but there’s also the issue in the U.K. where GW dominate the market in finding reliable sources of different paint ranges.
I know it’s cheeky to ask, as I don’t have the knowledge to create such a thread, but it might prove enlightening?

I'm not sure if this old post from 2014 is still true but...

To chime in, this still very much runs true; stickies are more often than not ignored.
Maybe the article system has something that can help with this query, or perhaps it could be a future community project?

There is an article for paint range compatibility, but IMHO it suffers from too many cooks in the kitchen and a lack of any method to determine the compatibility other than personal opinion.

I fear personal opinion will always be the fly in such an ointment.

That's why I prefer paint conversion sites and documents like the ones below, even if the first has Dorn Yellow totally wrong. https://redgrimm.github.io/paint-conversion/index.html https://tangibleday.com/miniature-paint-conversion-chart-download-link/

but there’s also the issue in the U.K. where GW dominate the market in finding reliable sources of different paint ranges.
Experience, and racks full of non Citadel paint, tells me this simply isn't the case.
As for compatibilities, there's a couple of well produced apps that do a very good job. I paid for Miniature Painter Pro chiefly because of its ability to import an image and then one can select part of the image and get matched from that. Add to that the ability to select and deselect paint ranges (of which there is practically a complete line up of brands) and also paint types (airbrush formulation, brush, spray etc) one can set it to only recommend paints from ranges you own or can source.
Plus all the usual shopping list/inventory features, it's well worth the pittance it cost.
