I recently bought a box of seekers of slaanesh and it came with the old rectangular bases rather than the new oval ones. I know that at an event the EO makes the decision as to what is and what is not allowed but, in general usage, are the rectangles accepted on gaming tables or do I need to invest in the new ovals?

You take the bases that come with the kit. GW has no clear ruling on bases, they even provide different bases for miniatures with the same profiles (Lord of Contagion for example). So take the bases you like most.

In my circles we've got a variety of old & newer players with a wide range of models/bases so we accept whatever bases came with models.
Or in some cases, whatever seems reasonable.

Hell, a few of us still have some ancient models mounted on GW hex bases!

It probably won't matter too much if you play with people you know, but it can look odd when there are a few rectangular bases among a sea of round bases. If you end up buying new ones with round bases and you form a unit with both types of bases I think you'll be real sorry. You'd have to be a bit of a That Guy to make a big issue out of some corners since both base types are 25x50mm bases.

Rebasing minis is a pain that I am dealing with for my Necrons since their base size update and I have a Seraphon collection with mixed bases and it has helped me give up on ever making the Seraphon units I got from eBay and trades to ever look like a nice cohesive army.

Honestly despite it not being a huge deal, I'd just buy new bases. They're cheap and then you won't have to worry about it.

I agree that it isn't a big deal, but just for information, the 'cavalry' ovals aren't 25x50mm. They're 60x35. [Though that's bizarrely difficult information to find, since Seekers are not currently sold separately from the start collecting, and that doesn't list the base sizes)
GW also does 75x42 (which is what the Slaanesh Fiends are on).

I learned this the hard way trying to find some replacements for rebasing a unit.
Ork warbikers were originally on the 25x50 rectangles (which they're actually too long for). Then they switched to 70x25 ovals (I have two biker boxes; one came on the former, one one on the latter).
Looking at them in the store now, they've now jumped all the way to 75x42, which looks a little better than 70x25, but I've no desire to rebase them again.

I wouldn't normally mention it, but trying to find oval cav bases was a major pain. I ordered the 70x25 for rebasing spider riders, and they just don't work (not wide enough). Luckily they did work for warbikers, and they matched what the unit came with at one point in time.

----
Also: alternate solution to rebasing for those interested. Draw a template on decent cardboard, glue the old base in the middle and raise the surface to match with tile grout (or greenstuff) and add sand or paint texture same as normal. Keeps the old base intact and no need to pry models off. A bit of cleanup, but imo a better way to get to a new base size. The rims will likely be a little rough, but there is customization that can be done (I like a gradual rise, like a sandmound, rather than a plastic edge), and smoothing if you have the proper tools (anything with rounded edge like most modeling tools).

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Seekers-of-Slaanesh says 25x50 here on the website.

Seekers of Slaanesh 60 x 35mm on their basing chart for AOS.

I think I changed my mind to just recommending to put them on whatever base they came with, this is confusing.

Huh. That page doesn't exist on the US website. No, wait it does, it just doesn't show up in the Chaos Daemons section.
I forgot they did do a 50x25 rounded base for a while (probably because they'd already phased out most of the 40k cav models). They've stopped selling them separately.

But yeah, the start collecting has them on 60x35:

Wrath and Ruin [edit: Rapture, which just doesn't fit in my brain the way wrath and ruin does] was the same

Good job, GW!

probably base them what your army is like for look purposes; lots of old models come with a odd base due to older availability issues, for example the prone snipers of my catachan and tau pathfinder came with old rectangular cavalry base, but I rebased them to old round biker base to look better.

bases galore:

I had a similar issue when I tried using bikers, as they used to use the rectangular bases as well. Come to think about it, back in late 2017 I tried to play a game in a store with a "no proxies" rule, and they threw a fit that I was using Fantasy Dire Wolves as Fenrisian Wolves (on rectangular bases) until I pulled out the Eye of Terror codex that literal proved they were also marketed to the 40k crowd at one point, and thus not proxies.

I've got that beat. About 10 years ago I was in a WHFB tournament (quite a rare occurrence for me). One of the requirements was only GW stuff..
I was playing dwarfs.
I brought only GW stuff with me. The thing is that I have pre-slotta base GW WHFB dwarves that are so old that the people running the event didn't believe they were real GW product and wanted to DQ me.

It took several of us old guard & looking the minis up online before they grudgingly accepted that I was indeed playing by the rules they'd set.
It not my fault I've been doing this longer than they've been alive....

Wow, that is ridiculous.
