Hey all,
Two months into 2021 so I thought I'd start a thread on some terrain stuff I have been working on to keep me sane.

First off a piece to add to my urban Imperial set. Not sure what it is supposed to be yet. I have a bunch of other urban building that I've made over the years but I really need to harmonize them as the painting and weathering is all over the place.
Its made from foam core board, chip board and serial boxes. The vent is the front of a dead hair dryer. I give everything except the metal a blast of sand texture spray which adds a nice.. sand texture to everything.

Next up is a little filter station or something, again for the urban terrain. I'm quite happy with the ladder. I was worried that it wouldn't look regular enough but in the end it's not too bad.

Finally, my daughter has been pestering me to make her a castle like her brothers castle.

..so here we go
The back is going to be magnetized to allow access to the inside. It is scaled for LEGO figurines.

This evenings work.

I bought a great tool for cutting circles in card so have been having fun with rounded shapes. No idea how to form cylinders form corrugated cardboard though so though i'd segment it. The idea is that I'll fill the gaps with filler.

A balcony as well. Royalty need a balcony to wave from

The 40k terrain looks great, as do the castles! I’ve recently become an uncle, I’ll have to keep the lego scale castle in mind for the future. Do you strengthen the cardboard at all?

Hey all,
Thanks for the replies.

@Thumpingbear - Gratz
The cardboard on the castle walls is double corrugated so quite strong to begin with. I think the spray on sand texture also has some kind of glue in the mix which also gives some extra strength and finally I always add a coat of thinned down wood glue to my terrain. Something else to consider when making terrain from cardboard is in which directions the corrugations are running.

I think I'm gonna call this building finished. I may add some moss on later at the same time as the other buildings.

I'm quite happy with the results as I took the step to make some home made tarrain wash, 1 part artists ink, 2 parts matt medium, 8 parts distilled water, 2 drops of washing up liquid.

YAY!
After a small slump I've managed to get something done on the castle.

I raised the whole building up to add some steps as princesses like walking down steps right
I also added the side walls and forward turrets.

Gate house fleshed out as well.

After all that has dried I will raise the whole thing up a few centimetres more so that is can be perched on top of a rock with a ramp leading to the from gate.

Thanks all,
A small update for tonight.

Picked up some tiny hinges to make the doors. 10mm x 8mm.

I think that all the blocking out is done now. All the crenellations are in place. I have added bands of card around the tops of the turrets to cover the slits I had to cut to allow the corrugated cardboard to bend round smoothly.
I'm going for a wooden gate house to add some variation to the surface.

Slow progress today.
I started on the doors. I built the frame first out of two 2mm thick layers of chip board with the hinges sandwiched in-between. I dried fitted it to make sure it fits into the door cut from the main building.

The doors are made from a three layered sandwich of cereal card. I cut small notches to receive the hinges. I temporarily put the shape that I had cut out from the frame back in to help keep everything in shape.

It was about this point that I noticed that some of the hinges are quite stiff. I'm worried that the card sandwich will break before the hinges rotate, but we'll see... I added some cross braces anyway, I hope that will be enough.

The castle is shaping up nicely, looking forward to seeing the finished product.

The rubble on the ruins looks very convincing as well.

Nice job!

Hey all,

A quick side project from the castle. A couple of thingymajigies for my urban terrain set. I picked up some junction box housing from my local hardware store. The kind of things that sit in your wall behind the light switch. I just like the way they look. I also picked up a cheap pipeline play set from Amazone and started sticking them together. A couple of bottle tops and 'hey presto!'

I built a base for them to sit on out of card and foam core. This brings them to about 3" tall. I then started on every ones favorite part - rivets!
My goto option is to drill holes where I want the rivets to be with a 0.6mm drill bit, cut some sewing pins down to size and super glue them into place. I think it works quite nacely. I dispose of all the cut-offs by bunching them together and rolling them in masking tape.

Next priming. I love this part as you get to see the actual form of the model in monochrome, gives a real sense of its form. I think I'll go back and add some bits of junk here and there to add some character. They look too tidy to me.

Next post should be back to the castle.

Hey all,

On the home straight now with the castle. I have raised the whole thing up by 10cm and will make is look like it is sitting on a rock outcrop like I did with my son's by rolling up some corrugated cardboard. I was going to use some insulation foam boards cut to shape but can't find some anywhere for some bizarre reason.

Added windows to the removable back panel.

A little miffed that the doors to the donjon have warped slightly. I think I should have left them longer so the glue would have set correctly before cutting them to shape... Oh well...

Next up, I'll make the rocks then plaster filler in all the gaps.

Lovely, nailed that fairy tale castle look. Are you going to paint it up in proper candy colours, like on your daughter's sketch?

Thanks,
Yeah, it's going to be all the colours just like the sketch. The whole thing will be base coated white and then we'll paint on top.

Hey all,

I'm really stoked by how the castle is progressing. Originally I was going to use foam insulation tiles to build up the rock that the castle sits on but could not find any, anywhere. In the end I settled for building a sub structure out of cardboard with vertical sections to flesh out the vertical strata and concave chunks of card to sit between. I will then go over this with paper mache.

Next step will be the paper mache then filler in all the gaps.

That's an amazing look cliffside that it sits on too! Papier maché probably wouldn't stand up to gaming condition though, would it? Thinking for doing other cliff projects for gaming.
