Hi folks.
I wasn't sure what forum section to put this in so went here to be safe.
So as the title says I'm looking for a little advice. My intention with this thread is not to choose an army from it per say but to narrow my scope of choices to the most viable for my particular tastes. Just a note before I start I haven't collected since about 2008 and I collected Orks in the past, just assume I know nothing (which is mostly true) and we can go from there.
So my tastes in any game whether it be strategy or rpg is I prefer two things and that is a slow and slower but heavier hit over rapid light attacks and I always prefer small reliable and elite force that is more of a core than a force than shear weight of numbers numbers, or a mid sized force that is middle of the road.
As far as ascetics go I could honestly collect just about any faction and have no issue look wise.
To this end from browsing around I assume the Custodes would be a good fit but have no idea of the rules or how they play. I assume you could built most factions to fit this particular scope. Anyhow all suggestions of who to look into will be most welcome along with any pros/cons of the armies you yourselves collect.

Pick Imperial Knights. Just a couple of models to assemble and paint. Will be ready for tabletop in a jiffy.

I have seen the knights and thought they were quite interesting. However I have heard from a friend that many people refuse to play them because they're a pain to play against.

With Vanguard Detachements, most Armies can be hard hitting.
Knights, Custodes, Death Guard, Necrons might fit the description.
Tyranids got a new army of renown called "Crusher Stampede" which might hit hard.
Dark Angels still has Deathwing.

Used to be that a Marine Dreadnought army was a thing, not sure about now?
Daemon Prince army? Should be do-able with Supreme HQ detachment.

Some good Ideas, thanks. I'll get looking into them, especially the Death Guard as I always loved the lore around them.

There is regular DG and Terminus Est which has no vehicles and no Mortarion.

Terminus Est is essentially just enabling you to play the old plague zombie horde from before DG were a codex.
If you like the slow wrecking ball approach DG is definitely an army you should look at - most of the heavy lifting is done by terminators, daemon princes and heavy artillery tanks.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

The excuse "a pain to play against" can be applied for any other factions as well. However I can understand beginners struggle against IKs because of a lack of wide-ranged army collection. You would need veterans of the hobby as opponents who have access to multiple units. Heavy emphasis would be obviously on AT weapons.
Another solution to fix this is to think outside the box. Take a look what the opponent brings to the table and create either a scenario or implement SR to even the odds, if he is lacking AT weapons. Examples could be granting extra points for army creation, respawning of destroyed core units or allowing the opponent“s support units (tanks, inf. with heavy weapons, etc.) to have the Tank Hunter SR. There are many possibilities to ensure a good game experience.
