I'm struggling to grasp these rules here and what's going with the new custodes rules. Maybe I'm in shock of how powerful they are or something. So my friend is using Shadowkeepers. So are both shield host traits active at all times or is it only when he actives his once per game while in the Kaptaris stance? Is the preferred stance just related to their once per game 'use both stances'?

Both Shield Host traits are always active. The preferred katah just lets him use both stances for a single turn (during that stance).

Sorry to disappoint! The reason they're broken up into two traits is that there's ways to get half of another Shield Host's trait using stratagems. IIRC, a Custodes character has to kill one of your characters or monsters in melee in order to do so.

I think when I kept looking at the rules, it said Trait 1/2 but my mind kept saying Stance 1/2. So I kept thinking they were a once per game lol
