I saw a soul blight gravelords army recently (sorry no link) that was painted in three steps. Primed black. Sprayed red from an angle (almost zenithal but not from above), and then dry brushed white. The effect was striking and also seemed easy to do at scale.

Does anyone have any tips or experience with schemes like this? More monochromatic styles in general? Any tips, ideas, or pitfalls?

I was thinking of trying something similar with my kruleboyz but with black, green, and white. Maybe also finding a strong contrast color to pick out details and weapons.

There are a couple options but it depends on your price range. Oil paints are incredibly easy and fast but expensive. On the other hand, spray paints are super fast but expensive.

Just check out Marco for example. You can use two colors of spray paint and some dry brushing to make an easy army. Great examples in the video below on spray paints. Even does some marines at the end.




He also does a series on oil painting minis. Usually he completes very nice models in a couple of hours which, realistically, isn't something feasible here. But it's still a very fast painting method with results that are hard to argue with.

At the end of the day though, it's all dependant on how much effort and money you want to invest. We certainly can't all be professionals like Marco... but we can learn some speed painting techniques from him and use them to make our lives easier.

Thanks for the reply, the first video gets at what I was trying to explain (and it's killing me I can't find the example I saw). I guess the idea is to be able to do a quick almost monochromatic scheme (or very limited in palette) to create a dramatic effect that looks good on a whole army.
