Okay, so my wife read Avenging Son with Vitrian Messinius in it and that is now her favorite character. She also hates me and only wants Primaris, but of course I'm expected to paint them. This isn't actually a big deal because some of the models are pretty cool. I want to make this a special project for her, so I need some background.

Vitrian led a group of Primaris Marines and as I understand it they were Unnumbered Sons or some such thing, does anyone have any more information on who these Marines were and what Chapters they came from? I realize I could just read the book, but... It's not my cup of tea so I'm hoping someone who has read the book can jump in with some info. I have read that Unnumbered Sons wore grey PA with their parent Chapter on the pauldron and this will probably be the scheme for the bulk or the army, but I want to do a Veteran squad with the reverse scheme, coloured armour with the grey pauldron. So, I suppose the main concern is the Vet squad. Are there any other characters that I can represent here or were there any specific Chapters mentioned as being under Messinius' command?

Unnumbered sons were normal Chapter colours with the Chapter badge partially obscured by a grey chevron.

Well now I can't find the blurb that said they had grey armour! Oh well. Any idea if Messinius led mixed squads or if he was stuck with UM?

"These armies were descended from the nine loyalist gene-lines, who wore the livery of their founding Primarchs, and were then further organised into Chapter-sized formations. These armies were then made to fight in mixed gene-line squads, by Lord Commander Guilliman[1a], who hoped the different gene-lines would learn from each other and not repeat the misunderstandings that have occurred between Chapters in the past[1c]. Despite fighting in mixed units, the Unnumbered Sons were united by their prominent badges that were crossed with pale grey chevrons.[1a]"

The citations are for several references to the first Dark Imperium novel.

Yes I had read that part online as well but I wanted some clarification since I recalled reading something about them having grey armour. The reference I found to grey armoured Unnumbered Sons was actually from this site, but it was a couple years old and it was asking much the same question about colours. The thread got necro'd with the updated info. Gert also posted a quick explanation and a photo, so...

That part of my question has been answered, but I would like to know if there are any other characters that I could represent from that book, or others in the series. Like, who are Vitrian Messinius' bros? What Chapters were they from? What did they do? If a person wanted to make an army themed on the adventures of Vitrian Messinius who would you expect to be in there and how would ya paint them?

I don't know if a lot of guys get to paint an army for their wife, but I'm pretty thrilled. I don't want to just throw down some paint and call it good, I want to make her a themed army that even the neckbeardiest dakkanaught must respect!
