Shah-Un read the latest update from the tac net out loud to his breacher squad with pride before the breacher squad erupted into a rousing cheer.
The battle had been a massacre. The ork beasts had stampeded in at a break neck speed, barely slowing down to toss primitive incendiary devices at a series of buildings, before attempting an ill conceived charge on the Tau battle line. Nearly all of the orks were cut down in a hail of plasma fire, rail guns, and smart missile systems before they could get into close combat. In a laughable display some had even thrown primitive spears at the breacher team, one of which had bounced harmlessly off his armor.
Commander Near Site's strategy of hanging back and letting the enemy come to them had clearly paid off.
Now all that was left was the clean up. Shah-Un's breacher squad was tasked to secure the perimeter while Earth Caste clean up crews made their way to the site to put out the building fires and dispose of the dead.
As the first Earth Caste crew and service drone contingent arrived, Shah-Un noticed one of the burning buildings completely collapse.
One of the Earth Caste engineers pulled out a tablet device and began operating the fire control drones with a sullen look on his face.
Shah-Un approached the engineer.
"I know they did some damage, but the Cadre carried the day today. The enemy is all slain. Today is another great victory for the Tau Empire."
The engineer looked up from his Tablet, a stunned look on his face.
"Brother, do you see those burning buildings? One third of the cadres' food supply was stored in them. I am no expert in matters of war, but I can see no victory here."
Shah-Un looked at the buildings and frowned. Did Commander Near Site not know the value of those objectives? He thought to himself, before pushing the treasonous thought from his mind quickly.
A sinking feeling began to fill his soul and in that moment he knew for the first time in his life what defeat felt like, and that in war, it was possible to kill all your enemies and still lose.
Soon the cadre would be fighting a new enemy...hunger.
