How do!

OK seriously this is my last thread for the day. I need to ration them. Probably.

But anyways. As some will know, I’m a fan of my old books, and reading not just the older, even original, background, but seeing how things have changed.

Given Chaos is a hot topic right now, I’m hoping to find folks with books I don’t have for a bit of content collaboration. Because I want to do a retrospective thread on in-game Daemon Princes.

Less the background of how one achieves such a lofty goal, and more the game mechanics of how to add one to your army.

From my personal collection, I can cover Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition - but I’m not precious about doing both. I am however precious about Bagsying Rogue Trader.

And so I need at least folk with copies of every Codex Chaos, Codex Daemons and Codex Chaos Space Marines since.

There’s no particular conclusion in mind. I instead intend the overall thread to be somewhat educational for those who don’t have access to all the info. I’d prefer the info posts to be at least a bit light hearted overall!

Can anyone lend a brother a writhing tentacle?

I've got copies of CSM 3e, 3.5e, and Eye of Terror - can't guarantee quick responses, but I do also have a scanner if needed.

I'd love to juxtapose the 3.5 mechanics on building a Daemon Prince vs the travesty of creative bankruptcy that was the 4th Ed 'Chaos' Codex.

In fact, the evolution from 3 to 3.5, followed by the great sundering from 3.5 to 4th could be interesting (and tragic) to document.

I have 2nd ed, 3rd, 3.5, maybe 4th/5th then 7th (plus the Legions expansion?) and 8th CSM. But I'm not an expert on Daemon Princes as I was never one to use them. I only really played Chaos starting in 7th and for some of 8th. I can function as reference but really I think you'd be better off with somebody who really took them to the table. Even when I played I don't think I did much with Daemon Princes.

I do recall that in Chaos 3.5, your Lord became a Daemon Prince once you gave him a certain amount of Gifts.

I do have CSM and Daemons Codizes from 3.5 to 8th. I also have the Black Legion and Crimson Slaughter supplements, Traitor's Hate, Traitor Legions, the Vigilus books from 8th and the DG Codizes.
(many of these don't have special Daemon Prince rules I think, but there might be some interesting relics, formations and stuff).

That might actually be a better and more informative thread thread overall. I know I’ve taken the piss out of Chaos players seemingly never being satisfied. And I still stand by that to a certain degree. But a lot of it is warranted when you look back on things in the right context.

And before I commit, there may be a certain level of “Chaos just ain’t chaotic anymore”. Hopefully in a “look. In the olden days you had an absolute riot of choices” and less “LoL cHaOs = RaNdUmB”. Now, as I mentioned in the rumours thread Rogue Trader’s Chaos was pretty random. Your Champion might become a Daemon Prince with really useful gifts. Mine might get there with Silly Walk, Silly Voice, Head of a Chicken, Uncontrollable Flatulence and multi-coloured skin, because Daemonhood occurred when you gather enough Gifts and Mutations, rather than when your stats hit a certain level. Very cool and characterful in my book, but I’ve a genuine appreciation and understanding for folk who don’t like it quite that random.

Well, I’ve got tomorrow off to do housework and packing for my holiday. Pretty sure I can do Rogue Trader at least. Once the thread is up, feel free to chip in. It would be nice to have similarly structured posts, and each edition chronologically in terms of posting order. But I know an attempt to herd cats when I see one.

Plus it would be kind of suitably Chaotic to have different writing styles and the editions all jumbled up. Make Dear Reader work for our knowledge!

I love the 3.5 dex. In my 4th edition games, I give chaos players the choice of which of the two dexes to use, as I think they have their strengths and weaknesses. For players coming over from 9th, they prefer the army-building simplicity of the 4th edition book.

For players who played back then (or who are frustrated with how character has been sucked out of the 9th edition army building system) they tend to play 3.5.
