Buildings in the streets. An actual lock together MDF border that makes the table smaller.

And, to make it worse, Tau!

I get that GW made up these new table sizes, and if that's all you have available, that's all you have available. Fair enough. But if you have a mat that's not that size, why make it smaller? I cannot fathom the logic behind it.

The Unholy Trinity

So the building layout was what my opponent wanted to do as he's a tournament player and wanted to set it all up a specific way so he can practice for tournaments. I don't mind doing that every now and then tbh, if my opponent wants to, but I wouldn't do it every time and it is a bit irksome being tied setting things up a certain way. I certainly won't be doing it frequently.

The MDF border. - I don't like it, not because of the reduced size, but because it's ugly, it's symmetrical so you just have a small gap at BOTH ends rather than a larger gap at one end
which is much more practical, and it has AoS stuff all over it - ew! So I usually set up my hazard stripe things which are in my recent reports - unfortunately I went off doing something else and when I got back to the table my opponent had assembled the monstrosity already so we just left it

Buy I also know you don't like reducing the board size anyway regardless of how it's done Afraid that's the norm at the club now and I've just got used to it. If anything, insisting on a larger board for this specific match when I usually use the smaller one would have felt a bit cheaty with Tau! If someone wants to use a large board I wouldn't really mind, but otherwise I stick to the 'default'. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it except HBMC

Yep Tau Love me Riptide, love me Greater Good, simple as. HBMC sounds like a prototype Tau burst cannon They have some of my absolute favourite models throughout the range. Whether the next few are Tau depends on how quickly I can re-jig the army into one that can play missions a bit better. I suspect I'll get another TS one in before that, then it's Tau bay-bee!

At some point in the new year I'll have to try out my Space Dwarfs, I'm just a bit sad/annoyed that they gave them loads of 'feels bad' rules that annoy people and are like 'Space Marines +1'. Following that, I'm slowly painting third-party World Eater stuff and will probably flesh them out when the codex is released (as the inverse of Tau). So that's the tentative 2023 road-map so far - Tau, probably Space Dwarfs, probably World Eaters, and my current armies sprinkled in. Master of Mankind is making me want to get the Custodes out again soon too

I saw shots from a recent tournament, and it was a whole room full of tables with exact same terrain, all in the exact same layout, all using (and ignoring) the mats they were on. Endless buildings in streets. One idiot had the gall to tell me that tournaments "require" symmetrical terrain.

They don't, and this whole "tournament terrain" thing is a recent phenomena. It didn't used to be this way. It's just this weird mind-virus that has crept into the tournament scene over the past couple of years. You used to have great tables at tournaments that you had to work with - like in real life, you play on the field you're on, rather than the field you want - rather than assuming that all games would take places on the same "chess board" every single time.

But I guess position and manoeuvre have become less and less important as 40k has moved on, so I shouldn't really expect anything less. Now secondaries are the primary thing people focus on. It's really kinda sad...

As for the Tau? The Tau are silly blue people who shall be exterminated. Never mind the fact that I also have a small Tau army.
