Went to my parents' house to help my niece and nephew put together some of their models while they were in town.

my nephew mentioned several times how my brother didn't like space marines because they get too much love from GW. please remember that what you say has an effect on how kids feel about their armies. i'm sure my brother is just resentful that in the 90s-00s his DE didn't get many if any new things, but that's a long time to hold a grudge about toy soldiers.

so again, if you for some reason have a specific distaste for a faction try to keep it to yourself around young kids who play that faction.

It's dumb to do it in the present age when so many 3rd party options are available. If you want space elves or spiky space elves, you don't have to look far.

I think this is fairly important and self moderation is key.
I think it’s also important for 40k players not to do similar to other games.
Which I think has lessen a lot last few years.

Of corse this comes to not hating on 40k when out as well for no reason. Discussion is discussion, but no reason to walk up and do that ether.

My dad is a Packer's fan. I'm a Bears fan. Most of that is our ages. When he was a kid and started watching NFL, the Packers were winning the first superbowls. When I was a kid and started watching The Fridge was scoring touchdowns. But rebellious kids like what their parents don't too. So your brother should keep some of it, but also keep it light and fun.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

I totally feel that. Sometimes adults at the local GW would talk about how OP certain armies were around the younger players and a fair few people got really demoralised. The staff would step in quite a lot though and get the adults to either calm down or head out.

Yeah, griping is one of the main pillars of the hobby, but you should never let your griping yuck someone's yum.

I remember running into a fair bit of that when I got into the hobby starting with everyone's favorite opponent: eldar. It's usually not too hard to shake off the complaints, but it does wear you down after a while.

As Breton suggests, there's probably a way to gripe while keeping the mood light-hearted rather than demoralizing.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Thats pretty disappointing that he cant be mature enough to put aside his own biases about toy soldiers to encourage his kids participation in the hobby

It’s a general rule of thumb.

Whatever piece of media you’re about to critique or criticise? Remember that to someone, somewhere? That’s their favourite thing ever.

Now that is not to say don’t criticise or critique. Just, keep it sane, keep it rational, and don’t make it personal.

Heck, if it’s something generally disliked? Talk to the person of the opposite opinion to find out what they enjoy. Who knows, you might see it in a new light.

Unless it's about FCs. It's like, politics and religion.

Just talking about watching Crystal Palace beating Liverpool will get me murdered, and I'm stateside.

In all honesty, I have a buddy who buys more Tau everytime I talk about how much I don't like them.

Okay.

You realise that you've provided nothing to suggest this.

Literally all you've said is that your nephew has mentioned what your brother said about not liking Space Marines. At no point have you said that your nephew's opinion of Space Marines has changed as a result.

Have you missed a key part of your story somewhere?

I mean, if he still plays, he might be resentful that DE have received naff-all new in the last 14 years, and instead actively lost units and options left, right and centre. Meanwhile, GW has been haemorrhaging new SM models and units from every orifice.

I'll just go ahead and assume the relevant part of your story won't be forthcoming.

I mean its probably a good idea to be generally nice to people who are significantly younger than you.

But I'm not sure how far you take it.

I mean cover your eyes if you are under 14 and reading this....
...But Space Wolves and Grey Knights suck. Marines aren't great in general. I don't much like the new Squats. I blow hot and cold on Necrons and I feel the lore since their revamp was probably necessary but confused. World Eaters are the most boring CSM subfaction and Khorne by far the most boring Chaos God. Vampire Counts have almost always been overpowered. Nerf Blue.
