Subject: 3k point armys, why is nobody making a big deal about this?

I remember when 1500pts was essentially a complete army.
I was glad to see that 2000pts has become the new standard.
I'm even excited at the prospect of massive 3000pt battles, but nobody seems to be talking about this.
I definitely saw it mentioned in the 10th edition info dump, so yeah I just don't see a lot of content creators or people in the tactics talking about the implications of 3k point armies.
If I missed the thread where everyone is speculating about said phenomenon then my apologies

3k been thing all the time.
But gw games suck in scaling down/up. Already wonky balance goes even worse.
And time to play goes even longer...

With the reduced rules clutter, I would be more open to bigger battles. Especially if they where considered in the design of the rules. I do wonder why they didn't just keep apocalypse, the latest rule set wansn't that bad

A big reason I feel is GW hasn’t really supported big games outside of put more or bigger stuff.
Where as other games I play would more often scale up with using systems to double what’s needed first, essentially having players play two similar army’s together.
GW has often just had a now you can bring a bunch of stupid things.
I already get sick of 2000 points games.
So not really keen for bigger games myself, if it’s just rescaling the game down a bit. That would be great.

3000pt games are already codified in 9th edition -
Combat Patrol: 50PL/500pts, 3CPs
Incursion: 51-100PL/501-1000pts, 6CPs
Strike Force: 101-200PL/1001-2000pts, 12CPs
Onslaught: 201-300PL/2001-3000pts, 18CPs
Each with a corresponding recommended minimum battlefield size.
The only difference in 10th seems to be changing Combat Patrol to its own game mode with rules differences to balance the Combat Patrol boxes against each other.

No-one is talking about them because there's nothing to talk about in particular. People have always had the freedom to play however they've liked and huge games aren't going to suddenly become a norm any more than they've been previously. Nothing wrong with liking big games, but they do take forever and are thus mostly fated to be occasional events instead of regular matches for most people. In general, as times have changed and not all gamers live in large houses with plentiful space and time, the trend has been towards smaller games with less setup to enjoy in shorter bites.
Traditionally 40k rules have also scaled pretty badly outside the 1000-2000 points range and even there it's always been creaking at the edges when a platoon level game system has been pushed to incorporate more and more models.

Once upon a time in my area, back in 3e-5e, 3k pts was the norm. For 40k & WHFB.
As was playing large multi-player games where you'd only use a portion of that (depends how many people were on your side that evening)
But that group eventually dissolved - some people relocated for work, others were off to colleges, a few stopped gaming, etc. One shop closed & was replaced by a new one & local interest in 40k was dwindling.
Several of us drifted off into other games & payed GW little mind.
And then I returned to the 41stM mid-2018.
Some where in between mid-5th & then 2kpts had become the local norm. Multi-player games had also become a completely alien idea.
Now, since the Pandemic, there's another local shop that's succeeded in drawing in a hefty 40k base.
2k pt 1v1 games are the norm. But larger games & multi-player games also run. Crusades & Escalation leagues are also popular.

I can't imagine ever wanting to play 3000k points. Too small to bring Apoc stuff, too large to finish in a reasonable amount of time.

You know that other than Titans you can field 1, often 2 (sometimes even 3!) of almost any LoW with just that extra 1k pts.
Ex: My already-working-just-fine 2k pt Necron list + 3 Monoliths (2 old/1 current version) & fill in another 190pts (oh, how convenient, that's all 6 of my little used Ophydian destroyers eating up 180 of 190pts...)
I've expanded my army by 9! models. The game is not going to take appreciably longer

As others have pointed out, it's already possible to play 3k games.
Personally, I feel like 2k is already a bit too large for 40k. Give me those 750-1500 point games over 3k any day.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

3k has traditionally been big battle at end of campaign, chuck the special characters in size. It can be fun but depending on the edition be sure to put a day ot two aside!

And how much more dice rolling?
Unit that throws in 40 shots in 1 model slows game more than 10 models throwing 20 shots.
And not everybody has multiple low's especially when they look silly on 40k scale. Not everybody enjoys saturday cartoon superhero style so forcing them to play with 3k armies not cool.
How much more board space you have available? 40k at 2k already is silly crowded. 3 low makes it worse.

To answer the OP - because my buddy and I only play once every couple of months, and 1500 points is enough to keep us up till 2am... We've actually backed off to 500 points and are more excited about the forthcoming Combat Patrol option.

Always some excuse....
That time I spend rolling more dice is offset by the opponent getting to roll fewer dice come thier turn (or vice versa)
As for the "extra table space"? Nope, wether it's at my place or the shop, a 6x4 table is still 6x4.

Played a few 2500-3k point games this edition, lost my buddy who liked big games or I probably would of played more. It can be fun with the right place and person.

Personally, I think even 2k is a mistake. 1500 is way better IMHO for most games.
