Hey everyone! I am new to AoS, and have chosen Maggotkin of Nurgle as my starting force. When going through the book it mentions this about allies: Slaves to Darkness excluding TZEENTCH units and units that can or must be given a Mark of Chaos.

Now my understanding is that that almost everything in the Slaves to Darkness book can and must have a mark. Does this mean that basically the whole Slave to Darkness book is off limits of allies to Maggotkin? Or is it that you just can't mark them of Tzeentch?

I noticed the disciples of Tzeentch book has basically the same wording with regards to marks as well!

Thanks for any help!

Yes quite a lot of StD books are off as allies. Not very many units you can take(and would be curious to know even 1. Don't recall top of my head).

HOWEVER all is not lost.

Check the "legions of chaos" rule which allows you to take StD units with mark of chaos as coalition units. This basically ensures those have the nurgle keyword. This also means you can take them IN ADDITION to the regular allies and you aren't even limited to point cost limit(400 in 2000 pts game). You only have the unit restriction(2 in 4 units. So if you take 2 StD units you also need 2 nurgle units. Or 1 nurgle unit and 1 beast of chaos unit(note what else you can take as coalition).

Alas GW has stripped down benefits of coalition in 3rd ed(in 2nd ed it was even more benefiticial to have coalition instead of ally which I liked as coalition was more restricted set you could take) but if there's any buff that require just NURGLE keyword those work on coalition unlike allies. In AOS2 you could often give spells from your lore to coalition units etc allies don't get etc).

edit: Cultists of various types lack the mark so those you can take as ally option.

So you could have 400 pts of cultists, say 3 units, then 5 units of STD and 4 units of nurgle in theory(general and 3 minimum battleline that can't be allies or coalition) if you can fit in points 12 units, 1 in 4 can be allies so 3, 2 in 4 so max 6 could be coalition from STD and then general+3 battleline.

Though as a rule of thumb allies/coalition aren't generally worth points due to not having army bonuses but some units can be useful just for the warscroll. But above composition would flat out suck

StD units which can have a mark are included in the Legions of Chaos rule, as mentioned above. Essentially they are coalition instead of ally, which means there is no point limit on them and they can carry enhancements (provided they have the correct keyword).

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.
