Paradox is publishing Star Trek Infinite, a grand strategy game in the pre-Next Generation era. Though there are Borg, because reasons.
Developer is Nimble Giant, who were behind the latest attempt at Master of Orion, which was honestly a bit tepid.
Play as Federation, Klingons, Romulans or Cardassians, 30-40 years before Picard was wandering about in the Enterprise.
Def looks interesting - if they can make it Total War style - so campaign with Armada style battles that would be great

Not sure what to expect, to be honest.
But given that its Paradox as the publisher and they're explicitly calling it a 'grand strategy,' detailed battles may not be high on the list.
What was the other ST 4X-type game from many years ago? (I will say around 2000). I think that one had three factions (perhaps?), I remember the Borg invading my empire, and just a single Cube was absolutely monstrous. The game changed to a 3D battle where you could direct the ships, for that phase.

So the gameplay trailer is out and it seems that this game will be Stellaris but Star Trek and I am 1000% on board with that. The Trek Stellaris mod is good but has major issues that impact the game and this is exactly the sort of game I've been waiting for Trek to do.
And yeah, that's really blatantly Stellaris (though at 0:27, that's HoIIV's tech tree. Edit: well, actually, it isn't. Its a mission tree, the tech research looks similar to stellaris. There are screenshots afoot.
The initial article I quoted said this was pre-TNG, but that's clearly wrong.
Iconic characters such as Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Data, Gowron, Makbar, Garak are just a few that will be available to their respective factions as recruitable officers. A diverse range of ships is also available, from the Federation's Defiant-class, the menacing Cardassian Galor-class vessels, the sleek Romulan D'deridex, or even the formidable Klingon Negh'Var battleships as so many more are ready to command.
Though you're also meeting species like the Bolians for the first time, so... a bit muddled.
Honestly though, Stellaris but with defined (and meaningful) species and geography kinda works for me. Stellaris generally devolves into a muddled mess of things I don't care enough about. A better framework might help that immensely.

There is a Trek conversion mod for Stellaris and while the devs have put a lot of work into it, it's a huge mess.
There are too many strategic resources, no hyperlanes so frontiers are impossible to defend, the AI doesn't work on anything but the hardest difficulties and the Federation dominates every single game due to the masses of free ships and brilliant admirals it gets.
It's also a massively story-oriented mod (especially with the Federation) and it's really difficult to play on the faster difficulties which makes it harder to enjoy. It would be easier to just watch actual Trek and then play the Star Trek Armada 3 mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
