Pride - There are many ways this term is used. Any miniature with their head held high, for whatever reason - chosen to carry the army banner or sacred relic, a rookie just finished training and spent all night ironing their uniform/polishing their power armor to look impeccable on day one, a commander pleased with their troops' performance, a ganger who's finally saved up/stole enough to afford the gun of their dreams. Or celebrating who they are. Groups of lions also are acceptable.

Back To Basics: This is a two-fold topic. One is literal, Paint a basic trooper, without all the bling the heroes carry. We all have piles of basic grunts that need paint, let’s get those squads filled out. Alternatively, take this month as a technical challenge. Set aside the fancy NMN and other advanced tricks that you sold your soul for, and focus on the fundamentals and starting techniques. Take a critical look on the hows and whys of getting paint on minis from the humble basecoat on up. Revisit drybrushing. Paint like it’s 1985.

Some Like it Hot!: Burning things! Spicy things! Sexy things! Or just summer heatwaves. So many different types of hot, depending how literal, metaphorical, or symbolic you want to get. Or combine them all into a burning pin-up pepper. Just bring the heat!

Sun’s Out, Guns Out. Rip off those sleeves and flex those muscles. Let’s see those arms. Or, if you have been neglecting time in the gym (do you even lift bro?) go more literal and overcompensate with some massive cannons. Or just double down on the theme and paint some guns that shoot suns! Either something like a plasma gun, or some star-eating doomsday device. Desert or other sun-baked scenes would also be good. Maybe the beach?

Poll will run for 2 days

Really didn’t know what to vote for here, got multiple options for all of the themes.

When in doubt, choose the degenerate option. I did.

I voted Pride just because I could use the excuse to open up the Masters of the Universe board game boxes and paint some Princesses of Power, but I'm good for whatever wins.

(And to head off any theorising, my 'hot' entry if that gets up won't be anything crazy, I've got a Juan Diaz daemonette on a steed that I've been putting off because pinning the tail on will be a bit of a headache.)

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

I voted hot because I wouldn't know what to do with the other ones tbh..

Also every Ork I make has his guns (arms and dakkas) out so that wouldn't be anything special for me.

I rather make something wearing sunglasses and sipping a cocacola than do anything generic.

Mostly, on my phone.

Suns out Guns out works well for Marvel minis for me

I voted for suns and guns, but hot is in the lead. I was leaning toward maybe some Catachan fighters, but I'm thinking that whatever the result I'm going to do some hot lady demons with their bazookas out. For science.

I voted for Back to Basics because I like the idea of just painting up one little guy.

I had to miss out last months due to lack of inspiration. Suns and guns, and guns that fire suns... that's for me!

While I voted for Back To Basics, I actually have a pretty good idea for Suns Out, Guns Out as well.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Haven't been doing any painting recently, but my Raven Guard army building/kitbashing project is coming to a close (phase one, anyway), so I might get back into it next month. Happy with either of the two leaders at the moment, got Ripper Jackson for suns and guns, or rogue trader fire dragons (that I've been meaning to paint for ages) for some like it hot.

Hm. I was leaning more towards Guns Out than Some Like It Hot, but they're tied (as I write this). I wonder if we'll end up with a Dragon-off...?

Yes, indeed. My painting backlog goes back forty years.

Maybe some month we should do “get the lead out” and paint something in non-child friendly materials. I’ve got old D&D minis from before health and safety were important in toys.

This sounds like fun. We'd need to adjust the theme a bit to allow for post-pewter hobbyists, though.

3D resin is surely toxic enough to compete…

True. Plus, I suspect that brush lickers make up a significant proportion of hobbyists, as well.

Looks like we have a tie.

For August we will do “Some Like it Hot”

and September will be “Sun’s Out, Guns Out”

Hopefully the weather will be nice and sunny for two months.

--

I was mostly joking about the lead. Although it could be a fun month, I think it would be very restrictive about who could compete if that was the only criteria. Good for us old grognards, less for the new blood.

I've been wondering how a tie is resolved. Alright then. Boobies two months in a row.

Do we have to do a run-off vote now (ie. a new poll between just Some Like it Hot! & Sun's Out, Guns Out)?

Nope. This is where the democratic facade slips away and the iron-fisted dictatorship shows. No run offs, only decisions! (Not really enough time for one)

Normally the second place topic gets one more shot in the poll (was “Pride” in this one). In the case of a tie, we just skip the vote next month and do one after another. Or that’s how my under-caffeinated brain remembers how we did it when this came up before. I get to use one of the perks of running this show to determine which one comes first. And as I’ve got the new flamer marines on my to-do list, while I’d need to find and prime something for Guns, I picked Hot for next month.

Maybe if it's open to multiple interpretations, 'Heavy Metal': suits of plate armour, hulking Terminators, tanks, the Iron Legion, or the miniature's literally metal. Or a lady in a bikini riding a dragon.

Absolutely. We’ve done “Heavy Metal” and “From Ages Past” as topics before. If people want to do a sub-challenge and see who’s got the oldest lead in something like that, very cool. Or like in “Age Before Beauty” where a bunch of us dragged out old metal banshees.

I try to keep the topics open and vague enough that everyone can find something to fit, but narrow enough to encourage people to push themselves and provide motivation. It’s a hard knife edge to walk.

Suns/Guns I have a pretty solid choice, but for SLIH I am torn between a Limbo Division gal, a KD pinup and a fire elemental.

Decisions, decisions.
