Subject: AoS in the Old World?

Hello, weird question, could you play AoS and 'pretend' it was set in the Old World. I'm very attached to that planet but I do like the way AoS looks on round bases instead of the monopose blocks that my CW suffered with in Fantasy.
No judgement on the AoS lore, it just doesn't grab me personally.

Yes, and I believe the original conversion documents are still around. Would have to adapt them to modern AoS rules but provides a framework for a lot of Old Word units/factions that have been cut.

I mean, i guess it depends on how big and how into the idea your player group is?
As of right now - you can essentially play with the current ruleset Beastmen, Vampire Counts, Chaos Warriors, Chaos Daemons, Skaven, and Lizardmen, and you have a somewhat more limited range available but you can still play Dwarves, Dark Elves, High Elves and Orks and Goblins. Realistically the only people having to play heavy proxy-hammer would be empire brettonia and other elf players.
But if you want to play in a larger AOS playgroup - which will likely be playing some of the AOS units and factions that presumably are the reason you dont like the setting, so you'd have to decide whether yorue going to go the route of say - "my chaos warriors are from the WHFB universe and just fell into a time portal" or something like that, or if youre goin to try and refuse all games against players who are bringing stormcast/kharadon/idoneth/etc.
my take is: No group of more than 1 fantasy grog is going to be happy playing anything except the very highly specific edition of WHFB that specifically favors the collection they put together and that they have specific nostalgia for.
They are *the* most entitled and crotchety group of gamers that exists. I've tried playing WHFB with people where they got to dictate the exact edition of the game they wanted to play, and I constructed my list to that edition of rules, and they get annoyed at rules working the way it says in the books because "I dont remember it working like that!"

I only like 6th ed myself
Jokes aside, I don't really have a gaming group, I'm kind of a lone collector. Even tho I loved 6th edition I always hated how you had to have this block of might-as-well-be-monopose dudes, where you can't even see half of them.
So you can still use a lot of WHFB stuff in AoS? I'm a bit confused about where to start with the game.

You can use a lot of WHFB stuff in AoS, models either representing themselves in the new setting (chaos warriors, for example) or being valid for counts-as. You'll want to either rebase or attach base converters though, as the bases for AoS are round, often larger than their square counterparts were, and their size is relevant for gameplay. What do you have that you'd want to be using? That will inform much of the advice I could offer.
Beyond that I would do three things;
-Download the AoS app (it's actually really good).
-Buy the big hardback core rulebook (on ebay for $20-30) as it provides a great lore overview for the setting as well as introductions to different play modes. Don't forget to download the free FAQ/eratta though as there have been some subtle but extremely important changes.
-Buy the current General's Handbook. AoS gets a new one every year and this one just came out either last month or the one before. It covers the scenarios and special rules for Matched Play, which is the game mode nearly everyone uses.

If it’s Chaos Warriors you had, a lot of your stuff is transferable.
So if you don’t mind the new setting, you wouldn’t necessarily have to buy too much, though you’d have to decide on rebasing and that depends on your play group.
I’d say potentially separate the lore from the game.
Stay invested in the Old World lore through books and old media.
Then play using AoS and new rules.

Yes, loads of stuff from WHFB are still usable in AOS.
As someone who played WHFB and prefers AoS, it really seems like the divide in unit design for GW was, in WHFB: "Is this a generic fantasy thing that people might recognize? If yes, include it, and we'll figure out how to fit it into the lore somehow. People know both Ghouls and Zombies because both are in dungeons and dragons, we'll have both Ghouls and Zombies in our game despite both kind of fulfilling the exact same niche from a miniature model game standpoint."
AoS basically just took everything in WHFB and sat them down in a meeting room with a couple of serious men in suits and asked "So what, would you say that you *do* here?"
And those units/factions that had an answer that wasnt "well, I'm a fantasy creature you might recognize from DnD" stayed.

Honestly that sounds like fun, You can certainly do that. I'm pretty sure all the old Warscrolls are either in the app or floating out there on the web.

Indeed, there has been some work done on this - my favourite is a complete conversion of the End Times to AoS rules. Some great work here:

Of course you can use the game system of AoS (or Warcry for that matter ) with the Old World's lore in mind.
You can even play with square bases. Or mix square and round, or use different miniature lines in the same army.
It really doesn't matter much.
