Was thinking of getting Diablo 4 but have seen countless videos of how broke & bad it is.

What are your thoughts & insights?

I rather enjoyed the main quest and collecting all the statues. The seasons haven’t done anything for me though.

Its another downgrade for the franchise.

The story was honestly pretty poor. The technical quality of the cutscenes was good as always, but the villains just talked around whatever they were doing and declined to have motives. Instead they get insufferable about pulling out the now-standard 'I'm doing evil because worse than me is coming' excuse that Blizzard has been riding for a decade.

The abilities and gear are pretty lackluster, which for Diablo game is pretty asinine.

The seasons actively punish you by requiring you re-do all the dungeons to reclaim all the item enchantments. And re-unlock some of the account wide buffs. (A small amount carries over for unlocking the statues, that's about it)

It actively wastes your time and isn't shy about that. Fun gameplay is rare and far between travel points.

It's another cash shop "game" where quality gameplay is far less important than encouraging you to get out your credit card and buy additional stuff, complete with mandatory always online requirements in a single-player game to enforce compliance with the mandatory purchases. Buy the cosmetic upgrades at absurd prices, buy the season pass to get the content that should have been in the original game, and I'm sure it won't be long before non-cosmetic stuff starts showing up in the cash shop. I haven't seen anything at all that would suggest D4 has anything to offer that would make up for these flaws, not when alternative games don't use the same abusive business model.

So Pathfinder is still the best Diablo.

See you cant say yes or no to that question. D4 is not like any of the prev 3 titles, and thus cant be compared.

But D4 do lack content and it was released 2-3 years too early, and the first 3 seasons will not mend the situation the game is in, only an expansion can do that. (same way D3 was saved when RoS expansion was released)
At the present time the only value is in the first playthru of the story, after that the game dont inspire you to continue playing as it is full of meaningless grind.

Last season for D3 is not far off from starting, i suggest you stick to D3 or D2 if you want a diablo fix. (if you realy want to test D4, dont buy it if it aint on sale, anything above 30 euro for the basic edition is a waste of money)

I'm... at a loss as to why you think its so different it can't be compared.
Kill monsters, collect loot, fight bosses, repeat. Diablo has never had a particular complex or varying game loop. At one point that was a strength.

The implementation of a lot of systems is worse (particularly the skill system, imo), but not uniquely so.
