Hello everyone,

As a long time anon-lurker this is the first real thread I am starting here on DakkaDakka.
I hope it can prove to be a source of inspiration to others, and myself.

The project in focus here is: Da Templarz
A mob of Orks who been inspired by the holy zeal of their foes on Armageddon and have taken to the stars on a Whaa.. I mean "Oly Krusayd!"

Progress will be slow - but hopefully steady - Real Life Commitments/Responsibilities and all that.

Pictures:

Amblard da Mega-Krumpa' - Champion of Gork or maybe Mork. [V1.0]

The philosophy underpinning this model was for a lowly ork lad to have a dream just mad enough to bestow upon him righteous and holy zeal granting martial prowess only dreampt of by other more girthy warbosses. There were a lot of base model options out there, but in the end I opted to keep this lad humble in stature. I am curious to see how he sizes up to the Emperor's Champion model in real life, and maybe get a V2.0 after a successful crusade campaign. -- In any case, I am looking forward to the many deeds of tabletop greatness yet to be achieved.

I will leave it at this for now -- check back soon. (I will be trying for updates 2 times per week).

Cheers!

What, such an awesome idea and only a singular ork mob?

Great work, from design to concept to background.

And that model is perfect for what you are going for.

As promised slow updates. I was able to get the ladz out to prime, and got in a session of painting to throw down some rough basecoat layers.

This pleases me. More Teplarz for the Krusayde

for the record, how big is this mob gonna end up? because honestly a full waaagh with that theme would probably singelhandedly be the most orky thing ever.

@ Not Online!!!: I have over 400 WFB orcs (read boyz) that need a new job, and I feel that Krusaydin' might be a fitting trade for them. So to answer your question a proppa' Whaa.. ahm 'oly krusayd! might not be out of the question. My only real issue is an occupational time constraint on hobby time, hence my original notice of slow updates.

Hello folks of Dakka Dakka! I hope you all are doing well.

This update came somewhat out of the blue. I am waiting on a bitz order so the ladz have been put to the side until the bitz show up. In the mean time, I figured they may need something to ride in, enter Da Defflugga'. I have seen amazing work here on Dakka Dakka and elsewhere of people building tanks out of plastic card and carboard. This is my first crack at it. I did not have a specific vehicle in mind with this design, it is meant to be a one off piece (which totally works for orks). The main silhouette inspiration came from the general design of Vietnam era gun-boats smashed with large construction equipment.

Da Defflugga' is still very much WIP at this point, but the basic idea is far enough along that I figured I would share. (Check the gallery for WIP and info about materials used and where to find them).

Cheers!

Hello folks of Dakka Dakka,

The first bitz order arrived and I was able to find some time to blue tack up a WIP of the much beloved Chaplun Gramulduz. I need to finalize a lot of stuff on him and work on details (Templarz symbols and whatnot) Overall I like the bulk that the Varag ghoul chewer model has, the dynamic pose helps a lot as well.

Hopefully I can get some more time to get these details finished up and get some better photos.

In the mean time -- enjoy the teaser.

BTW, isn't it a bit of a sacrilege to use the 400 whfb orcs?

I like Da Defflugga. It has a unique shape to it and looks perfect for rolling through mucky terrain. I like how you built the tracks. It looks much simpler and less tedious than building individual treads. How did you do that?

Also, I look forward to seeing what orkish artwork will go on that banner.

@ Not Online!!! "...sacrilege to use the 400 whfb orcs?"

Yes/No. With the relaunch of the Old World, I feel that there will be a revisit of production much like with the Bretts. they have shown so far. -- While I am a big fan of the classic models, I feel that this project warrants the use of some (if not all). I do have a good mix of 40k Orks to supplement as well.

@ Mr Nobody thanks for the comment.

The tracks were really time consuming to be honest, but overall not a bad way to go. How I built them is as follows:

1. MDF bases 25mm, 32mm, and 40mm were sandwiched together to create the wheels.
(I would do this differently in the future, because this process was time consuming and more expensive than other alternatives I found available later on. -- What I would do in this situation in the future would be to use premade wheels from a big box craft store even if I had to sacrifice some of the dimensions for speed and cost.)

2. Once the wheels were in place I used layers of construction paper (card stock paper) to create a basic "tread"

3. I used a thicker card stock (pasta box) under to give more strength to the basic tread

4. After this I cut the basic material I used for the hull (chip board) as well as toothpicks to create the texture of the tread

5. Apply (like almost all other parts of this build) wood glue (old paint brush application) onto the top of the basic tread

6. Watch some T.V. with a tall one as this takes forever. Note: cut x3 of what you think you need to go around the length of the tread.

As I mentioned Da Defflugga' is still very much WIP. I have tons of details to add to it (Rivits, gears, pipestacks, other ork and Templarz madness) -- I did go with the Deathskull glyph on the side as a nod to my favorite clan. The other thing about Da Defflugga' is that it is not a small vehicle [21cm long x 11.5cm wide x 8.5cm tall]... so as far as rules go I really have no idea where it will end up. A Battlewagon/Gunwagon seems fitting, but this build was much less about rules or trying to reproduce anything and much much more about learning the capabilities of the material I had on hand and learning lessons to make other attempts as scratch building (the Templarz really need a landraider or two).

Thanks you both for your interest!

Hello folks of Dakka Dakka,

Thank you for staying with me. A few projects are underway, and some are slowly getting closer to completion. Bits have arrived which helped me make some progress on the ladz.

First up an update for Chaplun Gramulduz 'Oly Zealot of Gork, or maybe Mork, or maybe da Emprah! (Who really knows!?)

After looking at how simple the work was, I decided to overhaul the right arm, sportin' 2 plasma cannons and 1 plasma pistol just for good measure I feel that this helps keep with the idea of there are the Templars, and then there are da Templarz. (plasma pistol is added to ensure WISIWIG representations are met and because orks ...) The chain of course is mandatory for da Templarz. Purchased in 72'' lengths from the local craft store the links are 1mm and really help to make the connection.

To attach chain:
1) drill a hole with a pin vice
2) add a dab of superglue into the hole
3) using a tool insert the chain into the hole
4) put a small bit of green-stuff into the hole to seal it
5) before the green stuff dries put a dab of super glue on it to help it further adhere to the surface.

Still have more detail to add, but overall I am happy with the direction that this is moving.

Next up a few ladz.

The lad in 'eavy armour is the sword brother / Broda' Eustace Ironklunkka' to a crusader squad / cruzada' skwad. Overall happy although I am thinking of doing a little greenstuff work on his headgear after looking at some images today, and I really should do some greenstuff work on the pistol as there is no need for an ejection port on a plasma pistol I guess ...

The templar cross on his shoulder like all those I have done so far is far from perfect, but I think paint will help quite a bit. I found out on the Banna' Boy that I will have the additional step of washing the greenstuff with dish soap prior to prime as the chapstik chap leaves an oily layer that primer apparently cannot get through. I am happy I did not really start working on that lad so much yet, only a light base layer lost.

The lad with the hammer is Urrak Smallhamma' -- I was in a great debate with myself on using orks as cenobyte servitors in the end that is not the correct route to go. I am working on alternatives (goblins and hobbgrots come to mind), but that is a problem for another day.

@ Olthannon, thanks for commenting. I have tons of old stuff picked up and stashed away. One of the treasures are the old Chaos Warriors. I know many people were happy to see them be redeveloped, but I think they (and other older kits) have their place and usefulness. The old Chaos Warriors squat-ish position meshes really well with ork torsos. The arms also fit well with the orks and do not look too out of place, I have more stuff in the works to post when I find some time to take photos. (Right now where I live is time to build and prime before it gets too cold to use a rattle can.) Needless to say half of the fun is trying to find a way to bring the concept to life, bits are one tool to accomplish that goal.

@ Aquilifer thanks for commenting. This is a concept that I have seen others do in small amounts. Ultramarines was most often the chapter of lootin' choice. I figured that after brawlin' with the Black Templars for so long on Armageddon it was only fitting that some of that cultural exchange would have rubbed off on the orks. I am taking it a littler slower than I would like (mainly due to time constraints), but also so I can develop each ork as an individual within a larger mob.

Thanks again everyone for keeping up with this project.

this is truly the best army concept I've seen in my year and a few months of being into warhammer. The genius of coming up with a force that could be used as black templars or orks on the table is very refreshing. I look forward to see what you add to this thread.

Hello all, thank you for your encouraging words.

@ Not Online!!! you and I both. The key is to build in the warmer months ensuring through the winter months there will be no need to prime models in the cold. Basically, painting for me most often occurs in the winter when it is too cold to allow models to sit outside and dry without a negative effect on the primer.

@ bullisariuscowl I was thinking about that idea actually. I have seen it done for some other purposes, I am not sure yet where I am leaning for cenobytes, but I could see that being a good option.

And now time for another update, some WIP photos of 2 more kruzada' boyz.

Thrakdreg da Choppa'

Body is a basic 40k ork body. The right arm is a classic warrior of chaos axe. Chaos marine backpack. Wolf tail totem that is really hard to see, and of course a marine shoulder pad on the left side. (I still need to do the greenstuff work, and the crusader chain.)

Rargrog da Lame

Body is a basic fantasy orc body (I think the chariot rider). The left arm is from a mono-pose fantasy orc with the weapon salvaged for later. The right arm is a 40k ork slugga. The backpack was donated by a Grey Knight, the leg is plastic tube and some greenstuff "toes." A space marine shoulder pad on the left side, and a piece of tubing cut for the right shoulder pad. Finally the chainsword was salvaged from a Khorne berserker at some point or another. (Still needs a green stuff templar insignia, and crusader chain.)

I really like the look here with the tabard, I am sure there will be a lot more lads taking up this fashion trend soon.

Enjoy!
