I've been digging through all my ancient WH40K detritus ranging back to Rogue Trader, and while trying to find a fan codex for 2nd edition Squats (I know about the Codex Army Lists, and I have a copy) I ran across this thread from 4 years ago:

 Polonius wrote:
I think to really do the Squats justice, you treat them as the "used future" straight sci-fi race. Every race in the game (except maybe Tau and Dark Eldar) are motivated by some sort of religious, ideological, or primal ambition. I would portray the Squats as mercantile, pragmatic, and focused on making money and staying alive. (Shout out to Kharadon Overlords here). Their aesthetic should be rugged, somewhat informal, and reflecting a culture that allows for actual individuality. Rules wise, GW can now make the full range of epic craziness, with tunnelers, fliers, tanks, etc. Squats will run to the durable side, with a good mix of shooting and melee, but with enough transport support to make up for low foot speed.

That's some quality prognosticating there.

I did find the WH40K Battle Bible with all the compilied rules for 2nd edition, so here's that one too.

Archivist training: activate!

Yeah... no. Any sort of fastener (including staples, paperclips or various other forms of clips) is inherently evil and bad for long term storage. If they're old enough they'll even rust, especially if the surrounding materials are somewhat caustic (which in the 80s/90s, they probably were). More modern stainless steel stuff will still leave deep imprints, even if they don't rust. Even three ring binders tend to be poor, because they'll often inflict pressure on their contents at the rings as boxes are moved and shifted, and the top and bottom pages are dealing with any number of chemical off-gassing (or outright deterioation) from whatever cheap plastic they're made from.

Rubber bands degrade in their own nasty way.

And of course, shoe boxes and cardboard boxes tend to be at least somewhat acidic, so over long periods of time are hazardous to any materials you leave in them.
You can get acid-free boxes (or acid-free buffering paper, which will help) but you have to know to look for it (and where) and most people don't.

And then you have to worry about wherever you stored them. Interior closets (without vents or heaters) or cabinets are best, assuming the temperature and humidity are relatively stable. Attics, garages and basements tend toward badness.

/end public service announcement.

Enh, they're *mostly* OK. Just whichever ones were top and bottom have "scars" on the surface. They're all still playable. The only ones that need blind shuffling are the Warp cards, and they are luckily still pristine.

Now to dig out all my 2ed codices.

Some years ago, I set a goal of owning every 2nd ed. codex (including Codex: Battles) and collecting every army of the period (except Necrons, for obvious reasons).

The Squats posed something of a problem because there just wasn't much there. The Black Codex gave a barebones description of basic troops types, but the only vehicles were bikes/trikes. They are basically more accurate, more durable IG. Oh, and good luck finding affordable figures.

That being said, as my 2nd ed. armies near what I consider completion, I'm contemplating how Squats might work. For miniatures, I'd go with WHFB Dwarfs upgraded with 2nd ed. weapon sprues. Exo-armor isn't too bad, just mod terminators to have dwarf faces.

The real fun would be lots of Thudd Guns and Mole Mortars.

Want a better way to do fantasy/historical miniatures battles?  Try Conqueror: Fields of Victory.

Do you like Star Wars but find the prequels and sequels disappointing?  Man of Destiny is the book series for you.

Exo-armor - why mod anything? I'm sure someone has a 100% accurate STL file for them. Maybe if you find the Squat community & ask real nice someone will share.... Failing that? Spend the $ once, learn how to make silicon molds of them, & resin cast your own.

Thud Guns & Mole Mortars - are (fairly) easy to acquire.

The obvious answer is that I don't do casting or 3-d printing. I made orks in mega-armor by buying some plastic terminators and modifying them accordingly. And given the ork propensity to scavenge parts, it works.

Oh I don't do my own 3d printing either. That's what the High School kids at the local shop are for.

I find a file, I buy whatever resin/fillimement they say they need for the project, & I give them a bit of cash.
I then leave the technical end of things to them.
This has proven cheaper & faster than me investing in the hardware & figuring out how to use it....

White Dwarf 111 was the closest thing to a codex they had, but that wasn't for 2nd edition.

My FLGS used the Inquisitor Magazine #15 as a Squat codex. I think there is a .pdf out there, but here is a website that has a bit about it:

https://wargamedork.blogspot.com/2014/03/operation-game-collection-warhammer-40k_17.html

Some cool new ideas in there but I think it had a feel close to WD 111 while working with the little bit of Squat content that came out for 2nd.
