I got the soviet winter starter set for BA and built a few quilted uniform riflemen so far. I know the maxim team are all on one base but when checking the 82mm medium mortar team (winter, of course)store page. they are all on one base, when in the support group and starter set pictures the mortar man is on an oval base, while the loader and spotter are on round bases. The set came with an extra big base. I'm thinking of doing the three separate bases option for ease of painting, and then using the big base as a movement tray for them. Thoughts?

'Awsum' is the highest rating I can give something based on quality. Example: I would call it an 'Awsum' AWS-8Q instead of an 'Awesome'
Yes-Close To The Edge is the best song of all time and I'll virus bomb/PPC anyone who says otherwise

You may do how you please. Personnaly, I find that having a single base is way easier as then the whole team is defined by its single base for movements, targeting, and so on.

However, nothing stops you from using seperate bases which on the other hand makes it easier to lay them on the board among terrain features, and to remove men as casualties as you take losses.

I'd say you should probably do as you said, this way you get the best of both worlds and if you're not happy with how it comes out, you can still glue them back on a single base.

because it is not a crewed gun rules wise you don't need to keep the mortar seperate for potential re crewing.

single bases make it far easier to use the same models for other WW2 rulesets, single bases with a sabot base to hold them is the best option

I stumbled across an old defunct CD-ROM, and found that when you trim it down, they can make fairly decent bases for multi-part gun and mortar teams.
Especially when dealing with larger scale minis (like 1:35). They can be thought of as game-playable mini-dioramas.
I will admit, They are not as aesthetically pretty as those circular or oval bases, but warfare is usually not aesthetic or pretty anyway.

those look really cool! Did you mean that you used the CD-ROM as a base? That's a pretty good use of junk.

Yes, oddly Tayama does no provide suitably large bases for their gun & mortar teams, so I improvised them using a single junk CD-Rom disk, cut into quarters. Of course I had to trim down the sharp edges. (Sorry about the late response, but I don't visit this site too often).
