I got rid of my third ed BRB in move quite a few years back, but typically you have to earn XP to qualify for a battle honour, and once you've earned, you can roll on a table, but GW also usually offers players the option to pick rather than roll.
I can tell you what the 6 options are from the 4th ed book, but not the 3rd.
Personally, I think that all previous progression systems are empty compared to what is offered by Crusade, but I guess if you're playing an older edition, the rules compatibility is tighter, even if the options are fewer... Which they are, and by a long shot.
You get one vehicle table in 4th, and it has to apply to every army and every campaign setting... so you'll see the same six BHs dozens and dozens of times.
In Crusade, you get a generic vehicle table in the BRB, but some Codices include their own vehicle tables which provide more faction appropriate options, and some of the campaign books include vehicle tables to provide BH options that are more thematic to a given theatre of war.
Caveat: 9th ed Crusade functioned as described above. 10th edition Crusade seems similar enough to 9th, but I don't actually have any of the 10th ed Codices, and while I read the Goonhammer Crusade reviews for all four dexes, it was a while ago, and I don't remember whether any of them included alternate BH tables.
