Don't believe I've seen this on here yet. Modiphius are launching a new game in the Fallout universe; Fallout Factions, a PvP Skirmish game akin to Necromunda (indeed, it was written by the same designer as 2017 'Munda). A more streamlined approach than the RPG-lite Wasteland Warfare but still with the full campaign mechanics you'd expect from this sort of entry. Initial release is going to focus on the Nuka World DLC from FO4 with the 3 main raider gang factions at launch. Miniatures are cross-compatible with Wasteland Warfare and the faction sets for the launch boxes are all multi-part hard plastic kits with a range of weapon options and builds factored in. Pre-Order is Feb 5th to ship in early March.

This is a silly complaint but hey, internet amirite?

I get annoyed when all factions have the same number of models. I'd like to see the cheap horde faction, the expensive elite faction, the middle dudes etc.

I appreciate that same size boxes and same costs are a good marketing strategy but I feel like it limits the design space if all factions need to have 10 models per gang.

One to ask Modiphius' marketing but yeah, it's been brewing for a while, just haven't seen a huge amount about it until this week (when online retailers started showing pre-orders).

Regardless, here's James Hewitt & Steve from Modiphius' playthrough video from a little while ago:

The mechanics do look simple but not too simple; there's seemingly enough granularity in there to make it fulfilling and that's only going to grow once more factions and weapons are added in.

From what they've discussed on streams, the campaign mechanics are bound to the individual player, so each gang has their own personal objectives etc. and it's not reliant on consistent games between the same group of players (though that's probably the more worthwhile method). I suggested that it was comparable to WarCry in that regard and they agreed.

If its any cosolation, the gangs likely won't use all 10 models off the bat and they do come in at different values.

So, the Operators, with the best gear and tech may end up being smaller as a result that the pack who are more swarmy.

The models in the box is more a case of what can we fit on the sprue (all designed by Colin Grayson of ex GW fame also!)

So, don't let the miniature boxes mislead you on the game.

Regarding the minis, each figure has 2-3 build options (including unique heads) and a bunch of base decorations, loose weapons, grenades and pouches to customise even further. Some of the weapons are not in Factions currently as the kits are also for use in Wasteland Warfare if you are more of a Narrative Wargame player.

My brief to James was based around Warcry as much as Necromunda... but he's done a great job bringing an individual flair to it, so don't just expect a GW game with the numbers filed off as its really not.

Looks really interesting!

I absolutely love the open sandbox/narrative approach of Wasteland Warfare (it's one of the main selling points of the game I think, along with the solo modes) but this sort of game will have its own appeal. And if a fun and fast campaign is playable without needing someone to live and breathe the rules (and carry 9 hardback books around with them) that can only be a positive.

I think the one thing I want to be really clear on is that this doesn't replace F:WW. Instead it gives a new way of playing for existing players who like something a little lighter and more action focussed while also answering the interests of players who like Fallout but didn't need a pseudo RPG (with a lot of components) who were not served by the F:WW experience (and trust me they exist having spoken to them at many a con... )

Its also partly a game for me for the above reasons I've been trying to get something along these lines made almost since I started with Modiphius... its a bit of a personal shame I had to step away from the project towards the tail end of Beta, but Samantha and Ben have done a great job pushing us from there to production and the creative team have made a product that feels truly like a "wargame" (to me at least).

Will be interesting to see how people react as it gets out into the wild. The media push is warming up now to my knowledge, but as I say, I stepped away from the frontline for a bit so its not my plan anymore.

Interesting. I like the idea of the game and think it's perfect for the scale (skirmish) but none of the minis really pop out for me. Admittedly I haven't played any of the games since the Xbox 360 era so maybe I'm not the target audience but they seem solidly and consistently meh. Are they resin like Modiphius' Star Trek line?

It was actually first announced here on Dakka in the Fallout Wasteland Warfare thread a year ago.

The MSRP is also 85 pounds, so probably $100-$110 USD, and has been up for pre-order on some UK sites for at least a week.

https://www.goblingaming.co.uk/products/fallout-factions-wasteland-warfare-nuka-world-starter-set

Each raider box, one sprue of 10 figures, is 35 pounds MSRP. So combined is 70 quid. For that extra 15 you're getting terrain, tokens, dice and printed rules.

Rulebook is also available Monday as a PDF. No word if it's free or only comes with pre-orders as can be a bit too much on their "teasing" info on social media with never giving real answers. But Modiphius likes to lock out PDF access with pre-orders for their RPGs so I hope they're not doing that with this.

I believe the release on Monday is the Quickstart not the full rule book, but it does contain rules and stats so you can play a game.

Is it Operators and Pack in the core box? The picture's a bit tiny for my aging eyes.

Yup, higher armor and tech vs lower armor and tech, but numbers...

Plus the Disciples are too weird... no one should hang with those deviants.

Well, not exactly... neither game uses D10s or the special system, or the activation system James created that impacts how much a model can do in the next turn.

The specifics of the Warcry thing were me loving the game, but hating how campaigns are "pickup", but the major story beats rely on someone having to play the "baddie" and the repeat the game nature until you win progression that always bugged me.

So, similar in that they are all skirmish games with a progression system, but as much "don't do this" as "do this".

But hey, check out the Quick Start which is dropping later today, if you like it great, if not, there are plenty more skirmish games out there that may work for you instead.

Hey I don't even doubt James made a great game, but you cannot go around saying "the design brief was half GW game A, half GW game B," not even in the negative sense ("dislike the way GW does this? come to us, we do it differently"), that still acknowledges them as the benchmark and your game as trying to measure up.

I have to disagree, that will be a massive bonus in getting people to at least try it.

Anecdotal, of course, but despite my best efforts my local pals will only play GW games. Saying "well it's a bit like these two well loved GW systems, but with Fallout flavour and humour" will be a much easier sell. And selfishly, I want my mates to play this so I can play this!

Having seen the QuickStart rules (probably earlier than intended...) and watched the playthrough video, the comparison to Necromunda and Warcry is very much broad strokes and I don't think it's problematic to acknowledge that there's similarities considering it amounts to 'it's a skirmish miniature game with gangs, guns and a campaign system that's linked to the individual player'. Even general turn/round structure is completely different. Not to speak on Jon's behalf but there's quite a distance between name-dropping other games to convey an idea of the type of experience a player can expect, and a suggestion that this game is just a literal mashup of two other titles with a Fallout Paintjob (which, from what I've seen, it absolutely isn't).

It's no different than all the games on Steam described as like FTL but..., or like Slay the Spire but..., or like Civ but.... It's a point of reverence, not a quality comparison.

Pre-Orders are now live. Interestingly the stated shipping dates are different to 3rd party sites so bear that in mind. Looks like the individual gang kits, with their crossover with Wasteland Warfare are March/April (UK/US) and anything specifically for Factions is April/May.

Quick-Start Rules are also available now so the chance to get a good handle on the core gameplay.

here's some larger sprue shots for the two sets in the starter box but we don't have any of the 3rd as the individual boxes store pages aren't showing off their sprues. @JonWebb not sure if you can help get people those as there's been some requests over on Reddit for all of them before buying into the game.

These are the biggest images they had so open the image in a new window or increase the browser width to see them larger.

Any idea whether there will be a starter set without miniatures?

Asking because the figures seem to be coming to market before (mid-March) the starter set (mid-May).

Its not my line any more, so I may be a little out of date with the plan, but my understanding is that "wave 1" is the Nuka World set, but yes the Nuka World models will also release solo for F:WW players.

In the future there will then be the potential for new starter sets and a stand alone rulebook if Nuka World is not your jam, but I can't give any time frame on that and plans may have changed after I moved on.
