Can someone clarify if you can use dark pact if no one is in range of melee or range weapon.

No. You need to be in range with at least one weapon yo make a Dark Pact.

It says selected to shoot or fight.

Selecting to shoot is done step before ranges done.

Unit can be picked to fight if it's elllgble to fight. Aka within 1" of enemy or have charged. Picked to fight then proceed to go through fight sequence which can result in consolidiate to objective never having rolled single attack.

Has there been faq etc to say you need to have range? Because for example picking charging unit that for some reason has no longer enemy nearby to fight and conslidiate into objective fulfils "seiected to shoot or fight" in dark pact.

Out of curiosity what's benefit op looking for?

There are some rules that trigger off making a Dark Pact, such as the Eye of Tzeentch enhancement (which can provide extra CP).

Yes. Sorry I listed it but don’t see update. Eye of tzeentch. Do you need to be in range of range attack or in range of melee to use the eye.

Well I would say you don't need to unless there's been FAQ somewhere(or maybe glossary).

Dark pact says picked to shoot/fight. As I said above for picking to shoot you need to be elligble to shoot which is defined as not having ran, not having retreated. Range is checked in later step.

In combat you are elligble to pick to fight if you are within 1" of enemy OR you charged. If you are elligble to fight you go through process. Pile in, fight, consolidiate. Again you can go through that process and even ended up consolidiating into objective without having enemy in range(say you charge into enemy with 2 units and then the first one kills the enemy). Your unit without enemy in range is still picked up to fight...And dark pact says "when unit is picked to fight".

Don't see anything that stops it. But if somebody disagrees provide relevant rule quotes. I have given my reasoning for why answer is "yes, you can dark pact even without anybody in range"

According to RAW, you can make a Dark Pact in the Shooting Phase even if there are no enemy models in range. You make the Dark Pact when the unit is chosen to shoot, and that happens before range is confirmed (even though you can do that at any time).

You can NOT make a Dark Pact in the Fight Phase if there are no enemy units in range* because your unit would not be eligible to fight, and you again make the Dark Pact when the unit is chosen to fight.

*Unless the unit in question made a Charge Move, and the unit they charged is no longer there when they are chosen to fight.

All that said, I personally think it would be a bit of a dick move to make a Dark Pact when your unit can't actually shoot or fight. Just because something is legal according to the rules doesn't mean you should do it.

Nottingham (yay!)

It may seem odd, being able to DP when you are obviously out of range to shoot, but bear in mind that it’s not a risk-free CP well, the unit will still have to pass a Ld test to avoid taking D3 MW and another one to successfully generate a CP. Think of firing a bolt pistol in the air as the ante and a henchman’s life as the wager.

It may not be risk free, but I'd guess its not within the spirit of the rule. Especially given the disconnect between the Shoot and Fight Phase allowing and disallowing alternately.

You cannot use Dark Pact when nothing is in Range. If you want to make a Dark Pact you have to select a Unit to shoot. When you select a Unit to shoot you must choose Targets for those Attacks. You cannot choose Targets when nothing is in Range, so you cannot choose a Unit to shoot, and cannot make a Dark Pact.

Nope. You select a unit to shoot even if it has nothing in range.

"In your Shooting phase, if you have one or more eligible units from your army on the battlefield, you can select those units, one at a time, and shoot with them."

When you select a Unit to shoot you shoot with it. Shooting is mandatory, not optional. It doesnt says you can shoot with it, it says you shoot with them.

"SELECT TARGETS
Each time a unit shoots, before any attacks are resolved, you must select the enemy units that will be the targets for all of the ranged weapons you wish its models to make attacks with."

Each Time a Unit shoots you must select Targets for it. Again mandatory, not optional. You cannot select a Unit to shoot, and not shoot with it, when nothing is in Range.

Emphasis mine

Its a loophole. Its probably unintentional. Its almost certainly unwise on both sportsmanship and value levels. But its where we are.

Yep. A unit with zero ranged weapons can be "selected to shoot"

You are both wrong. A Unit without ranged Weapons is eligible to shoot which is not the same as selected to shoot.

Anyway, I was wrong, one can Dark Pact without actually shooting.
