How do!

Too tired to do more involved Hobby today, as I’ve been fussing my slobbery, waggy tailed Golden Retriever Nephew, who is both 7 months old and huge, so too tired to paint. Instead as the title suggests, I’ve cobbled together my first army list. And purely to annoy the internet than for any practical reason, I’ve gone with an all Dreadnought “Fury of the Ancients” list, using that Rite of War.

I don’t think I’ve made any egregious errors, but feel free to double check my working as I definitely wouldn’t rule it out. And this is probably the first army list I’ve scribed in some years. Ready?

Fury of the Ancients 2,595 points

HQ

Venerable Ancient Contemptor - 255
Assault Cannon, Chainfist with built-in Meltagun, Havoc Launcer, Venerable Ancient

Troops

Contemptor Dreadnought Talon - 630 (granted Line by RoW)
Dual Gravis Autocannon, Havoc Launcher - 205
Dual Gravis Plasma Cannon - 215
Gravis Lascannon, built-in Heavy Flamer, Havoc Launcher - 210

Contemptor Dreadnought Talon - 625 (granted Line by RoW)
Dual Conversion Beam Cannon - 215
Volkite Dual Culverin, Gravis Autocannon, Havoc Launcher - 210
Gravis Meltacannon, Chainfist, built-in Heavy Flamer - 200

Heavy Support

Legion Leviathan Dreadnought Talon - 650
Leviathan Siege Drill with built in Meltagun, Leviathan Storm Cannon - 285
Leviathan Siege Drill with built in Meltagun, Cyclonic Meltalance -295
2 x Phosphex Dispenser, 2 x Twin-linked Volkite Calivers - 70

Legion Deredeo Dreadnought Talon- 435
Anvilus Autocannon Battery, Aiolos Missile Launcher - 210
Hellfire Plasma Cannonade, Aiolos Missile Launcher - 225

Got just over 400 points to play with to take it 3,000. Kind of tempted to drop in some proper infantry, give me some chance of taking and holding objectives. As opposed to just massacring anything my opponent tries to hold objectives with. Or I can add a third Talon of relatively bare bones Contemptors because I don’t in fact need friends.

You're running FotA. The whole list is an egregious error.

Mate at this point, don't worry about infantry. Just take more contemptors. I'd go with 2x contemptors with duel powerfists all w/plasma blasters. That's another 390pts. And leaves you 10 pts for another havoc launcher or something.

In general, if going for a Fighty Dread, I’d want to upgrade one fist to a Chainfist, or for a Leviathan one claw, one drill.

Pretty sure I still get my extra attack, and I’ve a better suite of weapons for wrecking different types of targets.

And right now? I don’t have any close combat focussed Contemptors. Which feels like a distinct oversight.

I’ve also got some magnets farting about, which may be the very dab for the pre-cast sockets.

Normally I'd agree with you on the fists. The chainfist does provide a welcome chance if you have to deal with av14.

In this instance though I'm not sure you really need it. You already have enough general anti armour spread throughout your force and the if you run into av14, well that's what the duel conversion beamers are for!
Consider though what you'd likely be targeting with a double fist contemptor. It's best use it to going to be either countering other dreadnoughts, blunt an incoming deathstar or munching it's way through terminator blobs.
A chainfist will avail you little in any of those situations, because in all three instances, the Brutal 3 of the powerfist is the better choice. Unless you're up against T8, the extra Strength of the chainfist doesn't add any advantage over the powerfist as they both wound on a 2+. The only advantage the chainfist has is if you encounter a Levi, where armourbane will come into play and let you reroll hits. Murderous Strike isn't super effective against dreads thanks to the atomanic reactor.
I'm a bit fluey at the moment and with the headache I have the math isn't readily coming to me, but if you work it out, hit for hit, the powerfist gives you much better odds of downing a leviathan in one round of combat then a chainfist does.

Moving on to other likely encounters, a deathstar or termie blob. Again, the chainfist loses effectiveness because S10 isn't any better then S9. Murderous Strike is great (when it activates) but there's nothing in this circumstance that Brutal 3 won't do just (or more) effectively as very few things have over 3 wounds, or high enough Toughness to not get instagibbed anyway. (This is also where the 2 plasma blasters come into play as they'll (hopefully) help pull off a few wounds before you enter combat. And when dealing with terminators/HQs. That'll be invaluable.)

Unless you're expecting to face a lot of AV14, I wouldn't bother with the chainfists.
With all that being said though, I know you're a man who favours his versatility, so my advice to you sir would be, if you really want the chainfists on the two melee dreads, use the last 10 points on one and swap the chainfist off your HQ dread for the other. HQ dread doesn't need it and it doesn't synergise with the Kheres anyway.

You must have a lot of friends, Mad Doc, because this list won't win you any...

Just joking. I would take a chainfist or two just because they look cool and add more variety to the models. That's always important to me.
