Time to pick a topic for April!

Nice Hat! - The proper headgear can make the man (or woman, elf, monster etc). In some cultures the bigger the hat, the more important you are. Dusty cowboy hats, feathered foppish ones. Tall crested plumes and ornate helmets. Let’s focus on getting to the top of our game!

From the Scrapheap - This could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.

Homefield Advantage - Your entry should have some advantage for being where it is. Defensive troops, guerrilla fighters, camouflaged snipers. Minis that belong and thrive in the place where they are. Or the homefield itself. Paint a terrain piece for your army to hold. A base of operations, never center, defense bunker etc. (Bonus if you use rivets or found objects to build it)

Bean Counters - Have you submitted your TPS reports? It’s a new fiscal year for many organizations. Entries should be record keepers, loremasters, scribes, administrators, accountants. Keepers of tomes and wisdom, and grudges. Focus is bureaucracy, logistics, and counting. Vampires allowed (One miniature painted, ah, ah, ah...)

Poll will run for 3 days
--

This is the first poll of the new competition year, so I’m going to go over the basics. At about 2/3rds of the way though the month I’ll put up a poll asking what we want to paint next month. It normally stays open for 2-3 days. If on a weekend I like to add the extra day because traffic seems lower. Unlike the vote thread, you can only pick one entry for the subject poll. People can toss out ideas for topics at any time, I collect them in a notepad. Fully fleshed out ones with a couple sentences describing them are more likely to be chosen, because I’m lazy and like having the work done. The winner will be the topic for the next month, and the runner up with be included in the next poll for a second chance. In the case of a tie, we will do both one after each other (so will skip a poll) and I’ll break the tie to decide which one we’ll do first. 3 months are fixed March (Space Marine) October (Halloween Special) and December (Open Round). There will be no poll for those months. This year I’m also going to fix February, as a “Lets Finish This” month, where we waive the normal start unpainted rule and let people polish off half painted models. A lot of people enter these and never get across the finish line, and it seemed a popular subject. If this year goes well, we’ll carry it on for the future.

I have swooping hawks to paint, so I went for Nice Hat. I can probably do any Eldar for From the Scrapheap, plus I have Eldar rangers/scouts which fit for Homefield Advantage. These are all rogue trader/2nd edition models, btw.

Bean Counters is the only one that's difficult for me... I do want to do a kitbash/conversion of an idea for my Exodites - an Exodite Master Storyteller - which would fit with the loremaster element of it, but I don't currently have any ideas how to go about doing that kitbash.

Been Counters tied for 2nd place back in ’23, but never got its second chance, so I dusted it off again for another shot now. What to do with date specific topics and second chances is a little fuzzy. April is tax time here in the USA, which is why I tossed it in the poll the first time. While it could be fine for any month, I figured I’d give the other topic the first dibs for the second chance. I just forgot last year when putting the poll together.

If it wins, I’ll paint some soulblight and go with the vampire/sesame street joke. Which I want to get done to get them ready for the new army book and a path to glory campaign.

Homefield will be the rest of the Eldar aspect shrines. Which would feel phoned in, as they paint quick, but I need to do them and it would let me get other stuff done for the month.

Nice Hat would be a 30k praetor. Nice big head crest on one of them, and he’s getting dusty and needs an excuse to get across the bench.

Scrapheap I might do the Warp Spider Phoenix Lord, who’s armor was lost and forgotten for ages...

Haven’t decided how I want to actually vote yet.

I might have enough bits to build an ork in a fancy suit. Maybe some kind of teef collector for the Bad Moons? I wonder if I could build a dentist's chair?

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Mostly, on my phone.

Well I suggested from the Scrapheap, so I really have to vote for it. Bean Counters would be an excuse to paint Walter the Wobot though. Nice hat... gladiators, or Blood Bowl undead. Home field... no idea lol

I have a toybash project that I want to work on soon, so From the Scrap Heap is perfect for me.

I went with Nice Hat because real life has kept me occupied of late and at least I know I have several options for that theme. The other options require brain power/preparation/archeological digs that I don't have time for at the moment.

As a fellow Eldar collector I also went for 'Nice Hat!' since all the new Phoenix Lords and Exarchs have rather overdone headgear and they are in urgent need of attention. Not taken part in these challenges for quite some time so this is the perfect excuse to join in again

I went from the scrap heap since I think it will yield the most creative entries. No idea what I’ll do for it if it wins though.

Nice Hat would let me dig into the backlog of Samurai. I'm not sure I have anything that would work for Bean Counter.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Looking forward to seeing your awesome work again! Though, it's looking like Scrapheap is going to take this one... hope that doesn't put you off from entering?

I might paint an old 2nd edition eldar dreadnought if Scrapheap takes it.

Grim Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain

A Protoss colony world

I could probably make any of these work, although some will be easier than others:

Nice Hat: I could paint Gandalf from the Thorin's Company set for Middle-Earth, as he wears a big pointy hat. Pity I've painted or partially painted all of my Dark Angels with winged helmets, as they might have been perfect for this!

From the Scrapheap: I have a Broodlord that I rescued from the used models bin at my FLGS, and it was glopped in rather thick paint (many weird colors, to boot). It has been stripped and re-primed, but it might still fit.

Homefield Advantage: For this, I would either do some Rohirrim, as they had to fight to defend their home more than once (both in The Two Towers and The War of the Rohirrim), or perhaps some Fremen from Dune: War for Arrakis (they waged a pretty successful guerilla campaign against the Harkonnens, after all).

Bean Counters: Both Librarians and Chaplains often feature books on their models, and I know I've got a few of those kicking around. Otherwise, maybe Denethor from Middle-Earth would work (he was always counting how Boromir always did better than Faramir, after all). Thufir Hawat from Dune: War for Arrakis might also work, as he was a Mentat and therefore very good at calculations and stuff.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

Well that was neck and neck for pretty much the whole time, but it looks like Scrapheap pulled ahead at the wire. We’ll run with that for April. Hats will get a second chance in May.

Damn, scrapheap won. Not sure what to do now

EDIT: I was planning on entering Miss Hat on the right since she's been primed now for months.

I know what to do, but I should probably finish this month's entry before I go about throwing bits together for next month...

Hat might win next month?

What else is in the pile? Scavengers? Scrappers? Gutter runners? Maybe build some scatter terrain?

One reason the polls go up a week or so early is to give you a little extra built time. But yes, be sure you finish this month!
