I'm having fun with list building, but I can't seem to get the point values to even up the way I want them too.

I'm always left 30 points here, or 55 points there.

Do you feel it's best to cram in an extra model into your army to reach the points limit (ie. Adding a Imperial Preacher to a Tempestus Scion force, where he really won't have much to do), or do you just run the list at under the points limit?

Right now, I'm contemplating buying Sly Marbo, an Imperial Preacher, or a Psyker because I have 55 point gap in my AirCav Tempestus force...

None really fit, but I feel that I could use the extra body.

Honestly not much.

I got 10 points freed up in the last MFM, and there’s literally nothing cheap enough to fill it.

Depends upon:
1) what army I'm playing
2) how intent i am on pplaying strictly to (my own) theme.

I don't play tournaments so my list of options include Legends.
One of my favorite pts fillers is Spindle Drones. Originally from Blackstone Fortress.
35 pts gets you
4 little oc1 bots with an 18" pistol, t4, 2w, decent save & FNP. And they are UNALIGNED. So ANY force can use them.
Sooo usefull.
I own 3 squads of these things for most of my forces.

It's harder these days since GW stripped all the gear costs and weapon costs out of the game. That used to be a great spot to slip things in to balance out as close to the point value of the game as possible

I keep them in a biscuit tin. One tin per opponent. And then, eventually? When I’ve got enough? I cash them in and field a Well Big Army.

I just clutch them to my chest and rant about the current unit pricing method while pretending I can't feel the hot tears running down my cheeks.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Enhancements?

Like others, I’m not fond of this less modular point system. In some ways it makes things more complicated to make a list, as you often need to re-jigger whole units/roles to make use of all you points, instead of just tossing a few extra upgrades around and calling it a day.

And with every unit having special rules, sometimes it’s not as easy as upgrading them to a “better” one without drastically changing how it plays.

If its 55 points then I'd usually grab a cheap character or small unit.

Once you get lower I'd fill the gap with enhancements.

If it's ten points I wouldn't worry. Not convinced taking say two plasma pistols in the old days to close this gap added up to all that much.

What to do with spare points is a bane to Knight players.

Go look at the meta chasers... every tournament there's a new bunch of Imperial Agents joining the Knights.

For most armies, you shouldn’t try and fill the spare points assuming you’ve already taken 3 Enhancements. If you have the units you want and are less than a unit from maximum points, rebuilding your army to fill those points is actually counterproductive.

Knights are a special case given your minimum points unit is 140 points. That does scream for Imperial Agents or Chaos Daemons to fill the gap and provide flexibility.

Generaly left over points are one of signs that either the army was heavily nerfed/changed or the build being used is not optimised.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

A lot of the time its best just to eat the difference. Take the models that do the job you want, not the ones that fill the points. Real value vs perceived value.

For example, you're often looking to take things that are undercosted by nature. Something that should be 100 but is 90 you can take 2 of for 180 points. Something else that should be 100 but is overcosted at 110 you can't take 2 of, but you could replace for one of the 90 point units if you have 20 points to spare. Neither is the "wrong" choice here, its just important to realize that the version of the list that's 20 points shy isn't getting less than the one that hit 2000 on the dot.

If you're off by a lot. Say 50 points or so, there's probably something in your list that can be upgraded to fill the gap. If you get everything you want for 1990 though, don't revamp the whole thing just because you've got 10 points burning a hole in your pocket.
