Someone mentioned the idea somewhere on page 48 of the current thread and suggested moving them to chain stories.

 

Personally I think they drive more traffic to this forum, I think moving fluff discussions into their owh forums hurt more.

 

I agree with more traffic. Not only to just the discussion thread but in general. If I know a lot of people are voting one after another I will browse other threads and then go back and vote again. I have found stuff in other areas because of suvivors. I say keep em going and if you don't like them don't read them.

Personally, I think they are hurting the discussion forum.

They are a waste of time and a post.

Nothing of interest is learnt, as the people that post on them are posting from personal preference.

They drag posts from other more worthy topics.

I say no more survivors.

drag from other topics? I would not be on this site as much if it were not for the survivors. I come to throw in a vote and then look around and throw in my .02 in other threads. Not just Dakka Discussions but all the areas. How can they be a waste of time if you go "oh look a survivor. Well I don't like them so I will ignore it." I agree some people post out of hate for one army or because "well if mine got voted off I will vote yours off." but it does bring people in to the board in general thus spreading and enhancing the board for all. If we have more people visiting we have more people that can contribute to other threads that actually mean something. Thus everybody wins.

As a suggestion if something meaningful actually does come up in a survivor thread for those who don't want to sift through pages upon pages of just votes, somebody should just post a new thread saying "Hey as reported in the survivor thread this new model is being released in plastic after all" etc etc.

I like them, but I think they should be linited to only 1 a month or so, that way we could have some time to come up with really good ones and not waste time on the lame ones like "blatant stereotypes" and such.

I like it, I rarely used to frequent discussions but do now, it is kind of dumb at times, but it kills a few minutes at work a day so hey...

I think they are. Or, at the very least, they aren't helping it any as it seems the discussion board seems to get less "discussion" traffic than ever. That is, outside of the Survivor thread itself, which has little to zero "discussion" involved and is little more than veiled method of spaming and increasing one's post count. Just look at it, it's mostly 50+ pages of posts identical except for one or to characters... As far as ignoring it, kinda hard to do since there has been a Survivor continuously since their inception here, and it makes it impossible to tell at a glance if any new content-worthy post has been made in Discussions with the most recent post is almost always in the current survivor thread. Not all of us have high speed connections or can browse mutiple tabs at a time.

I am not, however, suggesting they be banned/eliminated/limited or whatever. Just that they be moved to Chain Stories, which has been more than a little slow lately, to include games like this (and I'm sure there's plenty of others we Dakkites can come up with). Easy solution, makes everyone happy (the Suvivor fans get to keep their Survivor, those of us that are sick and tired of them get a survivor-free Discussions back). Please all parties while aggravate none. That's good, no?

Takes away from Discussions forum. There's a reason other forums like Warseer etc have a specific subforum for games like this.

I mod a large 20K + member board and we have a special spam area for stuff like this. Spam threads tend to bury other threads for people who look at forum headings for responses. If they look all they will see is "Survivor" and ignore the forum entirely.

Survivor is hardly a "Discussion". It should be moved to a different area of the forum. It hurts the actual Discussion traffic, and it is also very annoying to look for hot new threads and all you see are 5 survivor threads.

How about these 2 steps (with Russ' approval of course)

Rename Chain Stories to Chain Stories and Games maybe even move Fiction in there too... maybe.
Move Discussions to the #2 or #3 slot on the list of forums. As is it's buried at the bottom and now always obvious.

I don't think it hurts Discussion but I don't think it would hurt Survivor if it were moved to a different forum. And I'd rather hurt Survivor than Discussion, so move away...

The problem with Survivor is we have had too many of them too quickly and the subjects have got weaker. The format isn't right for taking a straw poll on, for example, which army is the most blatant copy of a real-life army -- a subject which is of some interest and could do with being discussed properly. It's great for slightly *female dog*y sniping of favourite characters, factions and so on. We may have used up the best of these. It's become a strain to think of good topics. Though there's nothing wrong with recycling good topics after a few months.

the subjects are absolute crap now. when i first joined Dakka the survivor was primarchs and that was interesting, now its what colour should the new GW dice be or something equally pointless.

I agree with Dicemonkey and Whitedragon, et al. 

When I see "survivor" on the front page under the 'last topic' in Dicussioin, I pass on by.  Boooring.  But a great way to pad your post count...

I'm over survivor. I had a lot of fun with it, but it is a popularity contest, and none of the recent topics interested me. One of the recent ones was "who has the best basic troops" or something like that, and Necrons and Space Marines got knocked out first. That just doesn't make any sense. Guardsman vs. Necron Warrior, who's going to win? My point is it's a popularity contest. Anyway, my real point is yeah, I'm not that into it anymore, but is it actually damaging Dakka Discussions? I doubt it. If people had something important to talk about I don't think they'd be that discouraged by a survivor thread. So I voted help. But my vote would more accurately be somewhere in the middle.

It's hard to keep a coherent thought going when your alcohol addled mind is moving faster and in a different direction than your typing fingers. Whiskey and Champaigne are an odd combination, but it was than kind of night. By the way, Moopy, Scott is engaged again. Yeay. Time for sleep.

it not even a popularity contest. its for sad people that stay up and keep voting all night. thats why you get armies liked marines knocked out straight away. is it really representitive of reality? No taking The Crawling Chaos's example everybody knows marines are the most popular race in 40k without a doubt but they get knocked of near the begining? How?? Cos some hating Au or IG player sat there all night and day voting the marines off. SAD

You know what bugs me, there are over 3200 members in Dakka right now. A thread gets over 50 pages of participation and a handful of people gripe so now we must have a big conversation on if survivor is a bad thing.

To those people who do not like survivor are were just voting all the +++++ to screw with it all you did was make it last longer. If you really wanted these to end you would just vote ------- so it was over as quick as possible. Then those who vote legitimately would be like there is no point if people are going to vote that dumb in these. Sure space marines are the most played army but they are also the most hated army to by those who don't play them. I found it interesting that those who do not like space marines were able to over take those who do and vote them off.

Face it I hate the show but as long as people watch they will keep being produced as long as people keeping making threads and participating they will go on.

Uh, I'd hardly say a "handful" of people are griping. While Dakka may have 3200+ members in Dakka right now, only 10-20 are logged in as registered members (with another 100+ lurking guests), whom also happen to be frequent posters. Which is pretty common with most web forums: less than 10% of the registered members make up greater than 80% of the post volume.

Since, by the vote, the active Dakka is roughtly split in half for those who think it is hurting and those who don't, does't support your argument that it's a "handful" of people. Besides, we were griping well before the current survivor (and voting negatively to end them), but they kept popping their heads up again and again and again. Survivor has done little to nothing to add any sort of "content" to discussions, which is what this is all about. It's old. Move 'em to "Chain Stories" already. Thanks!

50+ pages of spam is nothing to brag about.  I can see Portentseer bragging about that or the Eye of Terror but Dakka?

The moderators will decide where to put Survivor, or ban it completely if it causes too much trouble. As they've left it in Discussions so far they don't seem to be concerned.

At the moment we are all fed up with Survivor. It needs a rest for a few weeks at least, which might end in it dying a natural death anyway.

Out of a 3200 people if 100 people gripe thats only a small percentage and therefore a "handful," is what I meant. We were able to take back the current survivor thread and get it back to the thread it was meant to be. We were able to out do your posts and out number you guys. If you see the "last thread posted" is dakka discussions is a survivor and don't check for other things that is your problem but I visit other threads because of survivor. So well for some it is a pain for some it is a positive thing.

What I don't see as a "positive contribution" to dakka is a thread like this when every argument that has been presented here has been brought up in the survivor thread already. Isn't that what you gripe is about survivor? Its just the same thing over and over again but that is all this thread is.

"But this thread supports my point of view so its a good thing," right?

As someone who participates in survivor, my vote is to move it. I don't see why half the people that use the boards should be pissed off when it really doesn't make much difference WHERE survivor goes.
