Try and replace the cardboard with plasticard and PVC piping. Cardboard will warp when painted and fall apart over time. Trust me, if you're putting in this much work you'll want something that will last. Don't skimp on materials! |

It's more than a decade too late, but for those of you who are reading this...Kid_Kyoto is right. Large models such as this end up being stored in basements or attics and not used in regular play. Time and moisture will work their way into the model. Cardboard and tape/duck tape will eventually fall apart and paintjobs ruined. My only advice to those without the funds to use plasticard is to use empty plastic laundry detergent containers as "plating" and use super glue. The quality isn't as good or as thick as plasticard, but it won't warp due to moisture. I'd advise against using any plastic that held food items to avoid smells or insects (do not use milk jug plastic!!!). You may even consider thin balsa wood or cheap bird house wood if properly sealed against water. If for any reason you aren't able to use plasticard (lack of funds, etc.)...then paint with a 50/50 mixture of acryclic paint and Modge Podge, followed by Modge Podge layer of coating to seal in and protect vs. moisture. |

LOL, continuing my decade old chain of thought, if you can't get plasticard where you are, plastic signs from a hardware store (for rent, etc) can be cut up easily. But really, plasticard is a few bucks and easy to order online. |

Just adding a rider to the general pic comment necromancy going on - plasticard is 'Dense Polystyrene', whilst Old CD/DVD clear Jewel Cases are HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene). They are very tough, not quite as friendly to cut to shape (they are brittle) but are also widely available and you might have a few just sitting around :) |

Good point, I look forward to picking this discussion up again in 2031. |
