I had to do a book review of China Marches West by Peter Perdue. This book detailed how the Manchu Qing state in China was able to conquer the rival Mongolian state in Zungharia. He thus tried to argue that aggressive state-building was universal and not simply an idea developed by the West after 1500. He also tried to bring discussions on war and great men back into a debate that had became obsessed with economic and cultural forces. |
